Gailey\'s Offense

After 8 games, it's clear this is Gailey's offense. It's a run-oriented offense with primarily short passes. As gtmgt said, Suggs fits this scheme like a glove. He is very similar to Jay Fiedler. I don't buy the argument that Bilbo knows only a few plays. He's been in the offense for almost 2 years. If he knows that little, he should be lining up at defensive back. I simply think Gailey is not comfortable with Bilbo because he takes more chances which can be good (Wake) and bad (UNC). There are positives to this type of offense. You can control the ball and keep the other team's offense off the field. My biggest concern is this works better in the NFL than in college. The NFL, with no clock stopping after first downs and starting the clock after out of bounds plays, runs fewer plays than a college game. As a result, you can win without scoring a lot of points. That's not the case in college. The ultimate test of this offense will come in the next 4 games where we face 3 good defenses.

Re: Gailey\'s Offense

Not sure I'd read that much into it. CG does like to run, but so did O'Leary and so does Ralph. The short passing may be more a result of what the QB can do than any design. Suggs hasn't shown much ability to hit the long pass yet, and Fiedler can't. You have to do what you can sometimes. I also think ball control needs to be a big concern for us since our defense is so small. Speed allows you to do some things, but if the D in on the field too long they will get worn down.

I think the risk is higher with Bilbo right now, although he has more potential for the big play. If he was more consistent in the coaches eyes I think he would be playing more.

I know there was some improvement in the Va. game with Suggs, but i'm telling y'all the defenses we have thus far played are weak. His slow motion movements are not gone cut it against 3 of the teams left. We are more run and short pass orriented, however the run part is not good in college if your qb. is not a threat with legs. The short passes are your right his only game. Even with said I hope for his and the team's sake I am proven wrong.

The thing that bothers me with Chan is if we should get a 10 point lead then Chan would want to sit on it rather than turn up the heat. I think this conservative play calling will cost us
some games in the future that we should have won.

Buck, I don't know about that. I think the UVA situation was dictated by field position. Our first possession of the half was pass-run-pass. We also called three straight passes from our 4 yard line. Penalties, a fumble and batted down passes stopped us IMO. He didn't really stop throwing until our next to last possession (less than 6 minutes left)
