Gaston out for season

That stinks.

Looks like at least Bennett is doing well (very, very well, apparently):

"He's practiced very, very well. He's been a very pleasant surprise this spring, how well he's picked things up and his accuracy," Gailey said. "That's been a good positive."

Two "very"'s from Gailey. That's good, right /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/2orglaugh.gif

gaston and bennett

news-what a spin--they don't come anywhere close to the same
Gaston would have started 12 games and Bennett won't play except in desperation 3 qtrs this yr

Re: gaston and bennett

Actually I don't know that Gaston had the starting spot sewed up yet, but losing him is a definite blow.

Re: gaston and bennett

But we really could've used Jamal at corner, I like him at that spot. Now he will be playing safety, and we need to find another corner. They will be experienced, but all names I saw in the article are very capable. We sure will need them ready when Brady Quinn rolls in.

Re: gaston and bennett

Per some reliable insiders, Pat Clark has been impressive to the point that they started putting him against Calvin quite a bit to see how he responds. Apparrently he still was impressive.

Pat will be very good - I just don't like having so little room for error with more injuries.

That said - JWD is a good DB, and Lawrence Marius was a 4 star DB and will also be here next year in the fall. Not the options I would like to see used so early, but solid help just the same.

We are in much better shape that it might appear - just not as good as we were when Joe was healthy.

Re: gaston and bennett

I am NOT convinced Bennett is the answer. This guy didn't start for his high school and I find it unlikely he will be able to take the pounding that GT QB's have been experiencing the last few years.

As for the defense we are getting back our DL so if they can stay healthy that will take some pressure off the DB's. The D will be better than last year. The O will decide how far we go this year.

If the o-line comes together we will probably be in pretty good shape.

Re: gaston and bennett

He didn't start in HS and we gave him a scholly...?
Not quite sure I know how to respond to that.

Re: gaston and bennett

I just thought the "very, very" was funny (and maybe a little interesting). Didn't mean to derail the thread /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: gaston and bennett

Where the hell did you get that about Bennett? He was Missouri top 20 team by Rivals and the St-Louis Post Dispatch top 30 in the state. He wasn't a world beater in HS but he did start his senior year. He made a big splash on the summer camp circuit before his senior year and was actually stolen from us by Boise State before he changed his mind back.

I'm not saying he's the answer but there's no need to make stuff up.

bennett stats
HIGH SCHOOL: Named to the Missouri Top 20 by Rivals.com . . . Tabbed to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Super 30 team . . . Coached by Mick Picataggio at Lafayette High . . . Passed for 1,014 yards as a senior.

I must be mistaken....

I thought there was some issue at his high school? Maybe I am wrong did he split time?

I apologize to all the Bennitt supporters out there. I personally think Garner is our best shot when you go past Reggie.

For the record I was NOT a Godsey supporter either. During the Central Florida game I can't believe O'leary made Fridge take out Andy Hall and put Godsey back in there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

I just want to win ball games, so whoever gives us the best shot.

Re: I must be mistaken....

FWIW those who are attending practice say Bennett is looking pretty good. They aren't as impressed with Manley or Garner. Check out the Hive.

I think the knock on Bennett is that he didn't play football until his jr year in HS...

I percieve Bennett to be a Godsey type player, but with a better arm. I feverently hope he (or any QB backup) will have lots of opportunities to play in real games. We desparately need experience in that backup spot not only for next year, but someone to come in for RB in case of injury.

Re: gaston and bennett

I have seen Taylor Bennett twice in practice this spring. He is a lot better than he was last year. He has widened the gap between him and Garner by more than a year.

Re: I must be mistaken....

I think Bennett was behind an older quarterback at his high school and he didn't play but maybe just the last season. There was some reason that he did not have a lot of experience coming in.

Losing Gaston is huge. Gailey needs to go out and find some walk on safeties right now.

Re: I must be mistaken....

Garner are best bet at QB? That's rediculous. I went to practice last Saturday and spent most of my time looking at the QB's. Bennett's arm is much stronger than Garner's. In fact I was shocked by how weak Garner's arm is. During the mini-scrimmage Bennett exhibits much more poise and leadership. Bennett is several steps ahead of Garner. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dead_horse.gif

GG QC Coach

George was a miracle QB for Tech AFAIC. Looked like a nervous kid every time he had to step in and then WHAM! It all came together. Godsey was a great quarterback. Who wouldn't love to have him back?

My point is (as has been stated) why don't we hire George?

One of the greats.
