I just realized that Geoff Collins was the DC at Mississippi State who decided to leave immediately before the Orange Bowl in 2014 to take the same position at Florida.

Some speculated that his departure aided us in our offensive beatdown by hamstringing the Miss St defense. Those people don't give us sufficient credit, IMHO, but now it is also clear that Geoff was trying to befriend a fanbase he would woo four years later.

(Actually it appears that he left shortly after Dan Mullens publicly lambasted him and the rest of the defensive staff for a poor Egg Bowl performance.)

I know Whisenhunt is the least desirable of all the names floating for most of ST, but Collins is it for me. I have no special knowledge of his coaching, but his resume just doesn't intrigue me.

Edit: I have also been told that this is fake news by @33jacket, only fair to include this disclaimer. Word is that the dude actively recruited against us while receiving a GT paycheck when Gailey got canned.

If true, he can die in a fire. I'd rather let Sewak take over as interim.

Too much credit given to playing the long game in the move to Florida. Also, he’s from Conyers.

Wasn't he the recruiting coordinator for the 2007 class? That's the only thing that intrigues me about him.

I believe that was Giff Smith.
Then he was director of player personnel or some other such title. I remember he was very heavily involved in recruiting, which is why everyone around here was shitting bricks when he left for Alabama the following year.

Very interesting. He's still the least desirable to me, but I've got reservations about everyone and really don't know a damn thing.

I'm actually really intrigued by Satterfield, but since I started this thread I'll note that Collins' resume as a defensive coordinator is pretty good. In his two years at UF they ranked really high in scoring defense, which is really the key stat. Seems like his resume as a coordinator is in the same ballpark as (for example) Elliott'. And he's kept Temple at their surprising newfound level of relevance. Not easy when you're recruiting to Philadelphia at a basketball school with little football legacy.

Probably my biggest concern is that it seems like TStan's rightfully noting that our new coach needs to "get" GT is leading to an over-emphasis on anybody who's set foot here in the past. Collins work at Tech was pretty modest, grad asst, tight ends coach, dir of player personnel. None of that convinces me he's in the Tech DNA in some profound way.

Are they even pursuing Satterfield

that is fake news. He left GT before gailey got canned. He went to Bama. While at bama there was negative recruiting news. But, Brent Key, who was an actual GT player, negative recruited GT many times while at UCF. Documented too.

In either case its no big deal to me. You have to do your job. Not charity a place you were or left. I am sure, assts at GT who came from other schools did similar. So eh...lets hire the best choice...

Indeed.

Why would we expect GT grads not to do their job for another employer?

Many years ago Pepper Rodgers, in his book, talked about how he recruited against Dodd when he took a job at UF. That IS part of your job.

Hell, Mac McWhorter ( his family name being on an athletic facility at ugag) negative recruited the hell out of ugag while at GT.

Him doing his job for another employer is not the complaint. Either way, I edited my first post.
