Georgia Tech had six prospects on campus this weekend for official visits. It’s the first weekend that coach Geoff Collins has set aside for high-school prospects. Five are rising seniors from metro Atlanta, with a sixth visiting from Maryland.

Collins knows how to recruit. He has shown that.

I am not worried about our recruiting and look forward to our next class.

At some point, we need to get onboard and stop trying to sabotage our own program.
I am not so sure that Gibbs was not becuase of T. Choice. All of Geoff Collins transfers to this point have sucked. And once you take gGbbs out of the 2020 class his ranking look similare to CPJ. The difference is CPJ did not all this extra money and support to win. He could coach the boys up, unlike Geoff Collins. Maybe the new asst coaches are better than the previous, time will tell. But I am not so sure Geoff can recruit at the elitie level he sold everyone on.

Pretty sure McGowan was pretty good. And Ace - the LB from MD is pretty good. Camiglia was pretty good so I think not all the portal players Collins has brought in have been disappointing - a few have been pretty good. The Portal is not a cure-all but can be a pretty good band-aid if used correctly.

Dude's butthurt enough to bleed in about 10 threads today. Don't mind him

McGowan was good.
Eley's PFF rating isn't all that, from what I remember seeing. He does make a lot of tackles tho.
Cimaglia was a disappointment. You bring in a kicker with those accolades, he better be able to hit from 40 and plus. I didn't expect him to hit 55 yarders but 40-46 yarders should have been no problem. Problem is, they were a problem.

Some of the other big time transfers, though — Clayton, Ezzard, e.g. — yeah, not so much. Some have been varying levels of servicable — Cochran and Johnson. It's been hard to judge the DBs because, well, they just weren't coached very well. Perhaps we'll find out more of their worth this year. Or not.

Do you remember the season before Cimaglia? Yeah, I think we're going to miss him this year.

Point taken. I just bristled a bit at the assertion that we have struck out in the portal. We’ve had luck. Maybe less than we expected but it has not been an empty well.

It hasn't been the salvation we thought it might be. It's been ... OK.
But it seems like there have been more disappointments - including Pendley, who has had to give up football, IIRC - than difference makers.
I think Hall is going to be a big pickup. He's not Gibbs - who is - but I think he'll be a boost. I know McDuffie put up some good numbers, but that wasn't against Clemson or Georgia D - and some of the other decent to good we'll have to see - week to week. Maybe he'll have some success. It's just going to be behind an O line I have not much faith in at this point.

0 of 4 from 40 and beyond last year.
11 of 11 from 39 and in, so that was a plus. But the "best kicker in America" should have been able to hit from 40-48.

The 1 and done grad transfers have been serviceable; which isn’t too surprising since they had performed/played well enough at a previous school to garner attention.

The busts have been the 4/5 star kids that didn’t play at their previous stop.

I think the young man from Buffalo will prove a bigger get than Hall. But all i was saying is that the Portal has not been a dry fountain.

Recall that the kid from Louiseville back when - Anthony Allen - he kicked major butt. I have a feeling the kid from Buffalo is going to be a major surprise.

I'm guessing that's a Collins quote? If so, unfortunate. I was just grateful we had a guy who could kick a PAT. I expect that three ring circus to return next year.

He was 31 of 33 on PATs last year

One overlooked aspect of kicking was Gavin Stewart on touchbacks.

If you're a scholarship kicker, you have to make those. Period. If you can't be counted on to make from 40 and out, it is a waste of a scholarship.
Your "and out" part is simply unrealistic. 50+ shouldn't be expected makes, and one of those was like a 55+ yarder I think. So really it comes to a statistically trivial two attempts that you've drawn conclusions on an entire body of work against.

I don't know why you've chosen to die on the hill that Cimaglia was a bust, because it isn't the first time, but I don't think we've had a kicker in 15 years that met your expectations except maybe a year of Butker if two "should make" misses is all it takes to be a bust. If you graded all of our position groups the same way then no one except maybe Gibbs deserved a scholarship.

If you compare Cimaglia to the prior season Tech kickers then he is MVP level but if you compare him to kickers on P5 teams In general, he was alright.

You're right. Maybe we've been conditioned by ööööty kickers over the years. But I would take a Cimaglia and 84 scholarships every year of the rebuild instead of 85 schollies and an unknown at one more position, let alone one that is usually the leading scorer
