I think since carries is an integer it would be "many fewer carries".

"Much" goes with "less" to describe a rational number that could be noninteger, such as "The dogs' chances of sniffing a natl championship are much less this AM."

They may not say it this time, but ever since Trinton Sturdivant went down in the preseason I've been guessing that injuries would be the preferred excuse of DawgNation after their season doesn't live up to expectations.
