That was a real good post, very interesting, helpful and useful to me. Thank you.

Hard to believe that Dodd's 9-1 (regular season) '56 team only got the Gator Bowl, especially since his 8-1-1 (regular season)...Did we get screwed in 1956?
We were the preseason favorite to win the SEC and finished the season #4 nationally. Tennessee went undefeated in the regular season, beating us 6-0, winning the conference. They went to the Sugar Bowl as #2 in the nation and lost to Baylor. The real ööööed up part didn't involve GT. Oklahoma was ranked #1 from beginning to end, while completing their third consecutive undefeated season. Their conference rules didn't allow consecutive appearances in bowl games. So, the runner-up, #19 Colorado, went to the Cotton Bowl instead and Oklahoma stayed home.

Tech was playing such great football at the end of 1956, a bowl matchup with Oklahoma would have been very interesting

Johnny Menger, a member of those early 50s team, as well as a member of the baseball team, passed away last week. Since he was from my town of Augusta and played on the '51 Richmond Academy football state championship team, he was a childhood hero of mine. Keeping up with him at Tech turned me into a life-long Tech fan. RIP

Paul Johnson’s winning percentage is the most impressive IMO considering how much CFB had changed since to the his stint as HC. Amazing he was able to do what he did.

I honestly didn't remember anything about Johnny Menger's time at Tech, but a friend of mine found this article, and apparently he as a helluba good player under Dodd.

Examining the top five seasons of every HC on the flats just cements in my mind who the great coaches have been!
