Georgia Tech Qb's

Since learning of the Threet departure from Tech I got to thinking about all the highly touted qb's we have recruited that ended up either leaving or never amounted to anything. I was very pumped about Threet and truly hope he comes back. Here are a few of the ones I was thinking about:

Donnie Davis - consensus first team All American, #1 qb in the nation coming out of high school, ended up getting beat out by Tommy Lugenbill (sp?)

Brian Camp - 1998 AP Ohio Player of the year, Gatorade Ohio player of the year, # 37 qb in the nation. Yet he never did squat at Tech

Any Hall - #2 qb in South Carolina 1998, # 9 prospect in S. Carolina for 1998. Again, never did anything at Tech

Mark Logan - USA Today Mr. Football for the State of SC, #17 qb in the nation, 3rd team All American. Never did anything at qb, was a decent receiver in a very limited role. His lone moment of glory was catching a td pass vs Auburn in 2004.

Damarious Bilbo - 2001 Miss. Player of the Year, Superpreps All American, # 11 qb in the nation. Ended up being a good receiver after a rocky first couple of years. Never materalized as a qb

AJ Suggs - Consensus High School All American, #14 pro style qb in the nation, AJC Super 11. Ended up imploding and getting replaced by Reggie freakin Ball

Reggie Ball - Not going to even go here **** Voted the worst 4 year started in college football (according to Every day should be Saturday . com)

Al Pena - 3 star qb out of Leander Texas, one of the top 12 qb in the state of Texas for 2003. Transferred before ever taking a snap at Tech

Pat Carter - 3 star qb from FL, had offers from Florida, Michigan, and us. Never took a snap at qb and transferred to Louisville.

Kyle Manley - not the most hyped recruit but has done Nothing at Tech so far, Nothing!

Jonathan Garner - 3 star qb from Dayton, FL. Had offers from Florida (committed then switched to us), Tech, Miss, and S.C. Never saw any action other than vs Samford, has left the program

Now I realize not every kid that is recurited as a qb will make it in college but dang what gives with Tech and qb's washing out??? Granted we have also had a Shawn Jones, Joe Hamilton, George Godsey, but we have also had the list I posted above that either were terrible or never took the first snap.

Thoughts????

Simple numbers say most QBs aren't going to work. I don't think our situation is any worse than other schools.

I don't even begin to know how a recruiter can determine when a high school player has fire in his belly and blood in his eye to go along with his God-given 4-star talent. So I won't even begin to go there.

I'm just thankful that we recruited two great QBs last year. Only one of them was probably destined to play QB for Tech anyway and it is best that the race was determined very early. Now it looks like we have yet another scholly to give out.

From what I have heard about Bond, I guess the higher-rated Nesbitt may be a bit toward what he likes in a QB anyway. These things usually have a way of working themselves out for the best. Time will tell.

EDSBS.com is a satirical site. If you need confirmation for the point you're trying to make, you don't have to go very far - I'm sure a number of folks on this (or any GT) board will help you out.

Not to nitpick, but Andy Hall went on to star at Univ of Delaware and was drafted or free agented by an NFL team.

Al Pena tranferred at OKla State where he started at QB.

Just keepin it real....

This just confirms that you can't simply recruit one all-star QB each year. The odds are you'll end up without a QB at some point.

Pena played VERY LITTLE for Okla State..........if he ever started, it didn't last long.

The problem with recuiting QB's is that the student that plays the position in Highschool is usually the best athlete in the school, generally you would want your best guy with the ball most of the time.

In college all the players are great athletes, so QB's get moved to other positions or end up transfering to schools where they can continue to be the best player on the field and continue to play QB.

Pena did start, but it was for 1 or 2 games and then was beat out and transferred again to a small school in Texas.

I think the Eagles gave Hall an FA contract as a local kid, kinda like the Falcons did with Shockley.

In general, it's pretty proven that there's about, well, 20 top 20 QBs every year and that there's a limited number of starting QB jobs for competing BCS teams. When you consider that most starting QBs start for multiple years at a time, it's easy to see why so many don't make the big time.

you could make a list with every position on the field...QB's are just the ones even the average fan knows about.

I think knox was just affirming that Hall was drafted, not signed as a free agent. An earlier post wavered on that point.

This thread is silly.

Only one QB can see the field at any given time. QBs start an average of 2 years in a row, sometimes 3 or 4. These are immutable facts.

Count the number of QB recruits we get in any given 2 (or 3 or 4) year span, subtract 1, and there is a MATHEMATICAL CERTAINTY that that number of QBs won't start.

If we recruit 2 QBs per year, and our QBs typically start for between 2 and 3 years of their career, then that means that we MUST, BY SHEER ARITHMETIC, have 4 QBs who don't start for every QB who does.

Duh.

...and Joe Hamilton, nor George Godsey, nor Shawn Jones were drafted at all...whats your point.
My point is that Andy Hall was drafted and not signed as a free agent.

By the way, what kind of Tech fan doesn't know that Joe Hamilton was taken in the seventh round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? I watched that entire freaking draft waiting for Joe to get picked.

Yeah, I remember that day. Long and painful.
