GG's coments (LINK)

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

I don't necessarily disagree with what he said. I'm worried about recruiting as well. We must have a good year on the field. In addition, I also hope that our staff knows how to motivate our players only time will tell.

That being said, I think that GG needs to decide whether he wants to be a reporter or a fan. Most of the Hive takes his word as gospel and he tends to inject his emotions a little too much to be the GT "reporter." To reference the Bill Lewis era there, reminded me of when McCain likened Bush to Clinton. That's way below the belt.

Last year before GOL left he predicted BCS and Top 5. Now he says that the talent is 10-2, but last year he said we would finish 5-7 if BOB left. I loved the previous staff and GOL. I have no idea what CG will do, but GOL left and we move on. IMHO, GG's news posts and chats have just a little too much of his agenda in them. Just my .02. Very interesting topic and discussion.

Axe
I totally agree with your comments.
GG seems like a nice guy, but I think he has a personal agenda that sometimes gets in the way.
In fact, last year during the hiring process, Ithink some of his comments, particularly in the chat sessions were inappropriate, and revealed his personal feelings. Plus, he has been proven wrong on a number of occasions.

Having said that, I usually appreciate hearing his opinions --- opinions, not facts being the key

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

Axe,
I seem to recall GG predicting 9-3 last year but with top 5 and BCS a possibility. I could be wrong, but I do remember he was not as optimistic as I was (who is?

)

Yes GG does kinda get carried away sometimes - remember when he said mid-season that "he would be surprised if GOL was here next year?" Boy, that got jerked off the hive real fast. Later GG responded to an email from me that ND was indeed what was on his mind when he said that.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

GEETEELEE,

Yes GG picked 9-3 for 2001, I was speaking to his prediction for 2002. Folks were getting on him before last season because of the 9-3 prediction. He correctly told them we didn't have the beef to win 10 games in '01, but that he was thinking 11-1 and BCS for '02. He was very high on this team. It's clear that he has a lot of respect for the previous staff and that is OK, but to say a team is 11-1 with one staff and would be 5-7 with a totally different one is a big stretch in my mind.

I like GG's post and his information. He certainly knows his stuff, I just think at times he might let his feelings interfere with his objective analysis. Chan Gailey managed to do pretty well in the world of football before he meet Bill O'Brien, so we have to assume he knows a little about football. That 5-7 prediction really sticks with me. Combine it with the Bill Lewis mention today, and it's some pretty tough talk. After looking at his reply, GG might not have meant anything by it.

Don't get me wrong he provides great info, he just needs to be careful with the Hive. He has a lot of power over there.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

Axe,

First thanks for posting the CG recap for us out of towners! Great job.

RE: GG -- I agree with you completely. I almost responded to GG over there but decided against it. I appreciate his insights but sometimes it's tough to separate the fact from opinion. I also thought the allusion to the Lewis era was a cheap shot - but he explained that in a later post.

I think it a bit unfair to saddle Gailey with expectations of 10-2 "if the coaching staff gels". What does that say about last year's coaching staff? They arguably had a much better team (3rd rated passer in ACC history, leading receiver in GT history, All ACC runningback, Nick Rogers, Chris Young, etc, etc) PLUS they faced five teams that had new head coaches and all the turnover that goes with that (they lost to three of them), PLUS they faced FSU in a down year when two teams that we beat handily turned around and beat FSU rather handily themselves.

Recruiting is beginning to get me a little worried, however. I guess anything's possible, but it's hard for me to believe that this staff will not recruit well -- so I continue to believe that after we have a solid year, it will turn around.

P.S. I'm sorry if I sound like an O'Leary "basher." Actually, I'm not - I appreciate what he did very much and I only wish him the best - Helle I was prepared to root for ND for the first time in my life. Thank goodness I don't have to now.

But I also think he had his warts and if we are going to judge Gailey (as we surely will) we need to keep a few things in perspective. JMHO.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

This thread got me thinking about intense coaches vs. the laid back style. Obviously, CG is more laid-back than GOL, but I think we have some intense coaches on the new staff. Every group has to have the right blend.

OC O'Brien looked more intense this spring. You can tell he feels more comfortable and has more control over the offense in practice.

DC Ted Roof is a tough competitor and a pretty tough coach, but Tenuta is more of a yeller than Roof. Tenuta would probably chew you out a little when Roof might pat you on the back. I'm not saying which one is better, just that both are intense.

LB Brick Haley is another big yeller. Like Tenuta he gets on the kids a lot.

DL Glenn Spencer is pretty mild-mannered for a DL coach. He is more of a teacher.

DB Neither Crossman nor Modkins are yellers. Although, I would say Crossman is more intense. However, Tenuta makes up for the difference here.

TE/ST Tommy Raye is a pretty intense guy, one of the louder coaches on the field. Certainly a lot more intense than Collins or Crossman.

WR Robinson is pretty low key. I noticed Chan worked a lot with the WRs as well. Kelly was more intense.

OL Coach D and Coach Mac are very very simmilar. I'd have to say I can't tell a big difference in their coaching styles. Both guys seem like good coaches to play for. They keep the kids postive and are very expressive in their teaching.

RB Nix He's my favorite new asst. IMO, he has the perfect coaching style. Very poised, focused and intense. He picks the kids up when they are down, stays on them when he needs to. This is just a guess, but I think he is a future star. He's more intense on the practice field than Spencer.

This staff looks to have a mix of coaching styles just like last year. Although, the assistants will get less heat from the head man. It will be interesting to see how they react. I think it was obvious that last year's staff responded well to the laid back style from the head man in the Seattle Bowl.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

when I posted the link I did not comment b/c I wanted to hear what other people thought

It does appear that GG has some concerns and this comes through on his post.

I think it is somewhat unfair to criticize GG for being a fan and letting his personal feeling come out in his posts/chats.

this is a message board and GG is not employed by anyone on here or the hive. He is just talking "over the pickle barrel." His post is like anyone elses. You can or cannot read it. He does not force it on anyone. I for one value his well informed insight.

However I also understand this is a message board and EVERY post should be read with a certain amount of skepticism. Caveat Emptor

So if you read this GG would like to hear from you on stingtalk too.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

Law,

I don't want you to get the wrong impression. I value GG's opinion and information but I think he presents himself as an inside expert on GT sports as he has lots of connections to information. Since he is providing information to us that the coaches would probably not like considered "official" he often has to speak to us in somewhat cryptic terms. It is for this reason, that the Hive and GT fans try to read a lot into his statements. Some of his comments since CG's hiring have just stuck with me the wrong way.

As the Ramblin Wreck football expert and reporter he has a certain responsibility to let his personal feelings stay out of news and feature stories. He has a lot of power over the Hive and he needs to be careful with it. In truth, his position as Football writer for a GTAA publication makes him somewhat of a public figure.

He said that he didn't mean anything negative toward the staff with the Bill Lewis comment, so I accept that.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

I understand your point Axe, but I dont want to look a gift horse in the mouth.

If GG wants to give us info a certain way I will take it. I CERTAINLY do not want him to cut us off.

I will take info at an 80% accuracy rate any day of the week. That is about the same rate that the AJC give us.

So when I see people attack him on the hive then I am like dude dont read it if you dont like it.

I need to keep the info coming in.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

I agree Law, nobody wants to get cut off from information. Although, it seems like he is less forthcoming as he took a lot of crap during the coaching search when some of his info was wrong. That was unfair to GG, he was much more accurate than the AJC. I think he is usually very accurate with his info. Things may change later, but he usually has the current story.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

The thing that really worries me is that the Hill is about to impose tigher entrance standards for athletes. What the hell is up with that?

I believe I've seen data that shows that our football team already has some of the highest averge incoming test scores in the nation. Seriously, why would we make it even harder to get into this school. We already have to be very careful who we recruit. Do we wanna make it even harder? If we do, then we WILL become a Dook or a Rice on the football field.

That statement floored me.

Re: GG\'s coments (LINK)

Bugboy, Floored me too. He made a similar statement last year. When he makes a comment like that it just so broad. How are things going to be tougher? What kind of rules have "The Hill" passed down that weren't there before?

GG is a good guy. Feel he loves GT. When he makes statements like that though it sure leaves a lot more questions. More info should have been provided to back up what he was saying.
