GOL & Recruit\'n

Looks like GOL is going to extremes here. Check the size of his new QB and O.Lineman. I'm curious as to how agile these recruits are. Him a BIG boy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hugelaugh.gif Way ta'go GOL.

Re: GOL & Recruit\'n

I was hoping to see a video on Mayo the qb. Rivals says he is a 3 star pro style quarterback. At 6'4", 240 that makes sense but I wonder if pro style means Daunte Culpepper like.

With his other top schools Oregon, K State, and the utes, this kid certainly has some talent and its not like he is local to UCF. Somewhere in Ca.

Looks impressive for ucf.

Re: GOL & Recruit\'n

Check out the info at the bottom of his page - said he graduated highschool in 99, played in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system for 5 years before enrolling in school in 2004. This guy is quite old (24-25) to be just starting his college career - bet he is much more mature...Wonder how that will play into things.

Re: GOL & Recruit\'n

Thanks Money. I completely missed that.

That's been a pretty good formula hasn't it? Or, are the success stories like Weinke and the LSU guy (T Hodgson (?) )
rare.

Re: GOL & Recruit\'n

Why is it I feel that recruiting 25 year old men is quite advantageous than 18 year olds? With the NCAA's infinite wisdom there should be some adjustment made I'd think.

I know for a fact that I would have destroyed me at 25 versus me at 18, 19, or 20. 21,22 I'm not sure, but the early years wouldn't even be close.

Re: GOL & Recruit\'n

What about that guy who was 40something and played at USC last year?

And why should there be any restrictions at all, its college football, the only requirement should be that they are in college, and havent used up all their elidgibility and havent been professionals at the particular sport?

Peck, I guess you are in the mood for a lengthy debate! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif
On the pretense that you are being serious, I could not diasgree with you more.
I don't have any research facts to back me up here, but the guys in the 24, 25 range with 4 or so years of pro baseball have a big physical and mental advantage.

I know I am biased on this, but I feel recruiting juco players is a bit unpure and that's a long way from what you are talking about. I also subconciously (it must be conscious if I am writing about it) bristle when I hear about college players being married with kids.
I know, that's better than being unmarried with kids!

Regarding the 40 something gamecock receiver, that didn't bother me. It was a feel good story, and more of a sideshow piece.
I'll betcha the old ball coach won't have any more now that he's there, though.

also says he runs a 4.6

at 6'4" / 240 that seems pretty fast

Re: GOL & Recruit\'n

They may well have an edge, a huge edge, but these cases are so few and far between that I don't see any problem with it. You could also argue that a guy who did a 4 year term in corp, or army infantry might be much more mentally and physically prepared than an 18 year old. I don't see a problem with that at all.

Just one more thing that is making college football into minor league with a lot of BS rules, regulations, and degrees attatched, all the while pretending to be something its not. I think we've gotten so far off track for what college football is about that stuff like this seems wrong or unfair. I'm an idealistic purist when it comes to sport. I know its not realistic, but it should be, and God willing, someday the arena football leagues will take off and be used as minor league and let the college game get back to its roots (no, I dont see it, or any other minor league football happening, but I can hope).

Side story about the 40 year old receiever, Disney wanted to buy his story, and he decided that getting enough money for all his kids to go to college and not have to go back when they're 40, like he's doing, was enough to make him give up the game. Seemed like a good guy from everything I read/saw.

Re: GOL & Recruit\'n

Good points Peck.

I momentarily forgot that those in charge of our beloved game are spoiling the purity of it already. Touche'.

Also, interesting thought on the arena league. I like it.

Adult players

I have fixed feelings on this issue, but now days these kind of guys are fairly rare.

I think this stuff is the reason UGA doesn't count the games in WWII. I think if you play the games they should count'em, but they feel kinda outclassed due to the military trainee guys that were at tech then.
