Goodbye DRad!

we need a TECH man for this job. does anyone have any suggestions? Need someone who understands the difficulty in recruiting, loves TECH for what it stands for but wants more success in athletics especially football.

I say bring back Bill Curry. :turbonoes:

I was pro Bill last time when we hired DRad, but he's too old now.

If we could get Todd Stansbury from UCF it would be a good fit. Only problem is that he just started there in March, but the sanctions coming down on them might influence him. ND_jacket had another ex-Tech guy too.

You may be right, but why would Todd necessarily be a good fit?

I think Todd is a good fit for these reasons:
1. A Tech man who has been a student athlete and worked in the AA. He knows the challenges and his heart would be with us.
2. He has prepared well for this responsibility as you look at his resume.
3. While UCF would hate to lose him after one year, it would not be so unusual for someone to hear the call of his alma mater.
4. Old enough to be mature, young enough to relate well to younger fans an donors.
5. It seems those who have known him and worked with him like him - I see him as capable of bringing the Tech family together.
6. Although he was an athlete he has pointed his career in the direction of athletic administration, not coaching. The idea of hiring a coach does not work any longer, the person must be a sports administrator.

I don't understand all this "we need a Tech man" non sense. Why is it so important to have a Tech grad as the AD? Frankly, I would rather see an outsider so we have a new perspective. DRAD was an outsider and, overall, he did well. No one could've foreseen in 2009 that CPJ would implode.

I can agree with this also. Like it or not Tech has not been favorable to athletics. Since this guy will be athletic director it would seem a guy with fresh ideas on making the institute a whole would be refreshing.

We haven't really had an insider as athletic director for a long time. Someone like Todd Stansbury has an understanding of the challenges at Tech and has spent some time away gaining outside perspectives and experience as well. We don't want another Dave Braine bringing in stupid ideas like permanently committing to a coach. Like it or not, Tech will not be overrun by the AA. That's a fact of life.

Why not have someone who is at least familiar with the school?

If the school is willing to understand that athletic failure is actually "The Institute" being a failure then I am all for it.

Because it limits our choices. Nothing against Tech men (seeing as how I am one) but seriously, we don't need to limit the list to alumni.

Whoever takes the job needs to be two things that neither Braine or dRad were: a politician and a salesman.

This is a big chance for our athletic programs to make a huge leap. Let's make the most of it by finding the most talented AD prospect in the country and making him/her an offer they can't turn down.

We are Georgia Tech and we demand and deserve the best there is.

Agreed, we now have class A sports facilities, more money coming from the ACC, the "potential" at least to have a great basketball program, and who knows about our ---- football team - things seemed to be going to well in this department.

The biggest issue's I think the next AD should confront off the top of my head are:

1) Changing and/or improving the aura around Tech sports

2) Growing the fan base

3) Growing the fan base

4) Making the Thriller Dome *the* place to see basketball in Atlanta.

5) Filling BDS

It's going to be natural for the next AD to just reach out to alums, but I hope they develop a strategy that not only improves attendance with alumni, but also brings in new fans from around the state. In 3 short years Stanford became a national brand from being one of the losingest teams of all time, GT can do the same.

EDIT: And by the same I mean become a national brand.
