:biggthumpup:First GT gets the real good news that FB Luke Cox is transferring from UConn. Cox appeared to have a co-starter position @ fullback going into Spring training.
:biggthumpup:Now the Yellow Jackets receive great news that DE Anthony Egbuniwe from Tulsa is coming to Tech. Egbuniwe was named to the Conference USA all-Freshman team.
Both 2nd yr youngsters will be sitting out '07 as a RS yr & become RSophs in '08. These are not only good players, but positions of need for the '08 season. FB Mike Cox leaves after '07 & DEs Oliver & Robertson move on as well.
These additions are especially good, in my opinion, as they've already had a season of college ball practice. They also get to participate in some of the late Summer camp & all the Fall season in the Rambling Wreck system. Both players should be able to make a real move for playing time in the Spring.
A tip-o-the-hat is in order for our football staff. Does this make the new Yellow Jacket class coming in this Fall a little better or what!!!!

Nice!

Luke Cox was a walk-on at UConn and is walking on at GT with the hope of earning a full ride one day.

Egbuniwe will be on full scholarship from day one.

Welcome to the Flats young men, great to have ya. The last walkon I remember did quite well, ohh what was his name, the running back from Houston, Tx no-one ever heard of?? Ohh, yeah, it was PJ Daniels and he was one helluva player. I hope these two young men turn out to be just as good as ole PJ.

By the way, where did PJ ever end up?

Last I heard, PJ was on the scout team for the Ravens. Don't know what happened to him after that. He was one of my all-time favorite Tech players.

Hiverdtech -

If it puts your mind at ease, Mike Cox claims that his brother is much better than he is. Whether it's true or not, who knows, but if he's even close he'll be one of the better fullbacks we've had in years (not counting vastly underrated Jimmy Dixon).

Anyway - Luke was scheduled to start at U Conn this coming year, in a battle between him and another guy. U Conn isn't Tech and neither is Tulsa, but I still think you'll be pleasantly surprised with both these guys.

Gailey is not a guy that wastes scholarships. They expect both these guys to constribute.

Everyone always assumes the negative on this board...or any I suppose. Just because someone is a walk-on that does not mean they are not going to contribute. We have had several walk-on's play in the NFL like Nick Ferguson, Will Heller, Andrew Economos, and PJ Daniels.

I was just throwing out information for those that keep up with how many scholarships we have...and have to give.

Crazy4Tech...you stated the last walk-on you remember was PJ Daniels. As information, we place 15 kids on preferred walk-on status each year..and then about 5-10 more walk-on additionally to get us close to the 105 cap for the roster.

Red, If Cox was a walkon at UConn and didn't receive a scholarship, then why can't he play immediately at Tech, if needed this Fall?

Good question midatlanta. Unless he was put on scholarship prior to this school year I don't know why he couldn't.

Andrew Smith, Tyler Evans, Bret White, James Liipfert, and Mo Yahiaoui are some of the walk-ons that made contributions last year.

Durant Brooks came to Tech as a walk-on.

But that still doesn't answer the redshirt question. Unless you're saying we want him to RS to save a year?

I really don't see why you should have to sit out a year if you aren't a scholarship player. That seems unfair.

the way I read it he would redshirt this year and yes we want him to. so he could play in 2008.

Once you step onto the Div. 1A football field..your clock starts for 5 years whether you are on scholarship or not. During that time...if you transfer to another Div. 1A school you have to sit out a year...whether you are on scholarship or not. You could transfer to Valdosta St. from UConn and play right away...5 year clock still ticking though.

As long as his brother is healthy, why would we want him to spend a year as a backup? It seems to me, we're getting a player with game experience who will now have a year to acclimate to the offense and to academics. The fact that UConn is having to play non-scholarship true freshmen while we are redshirting most of our freshmen, shows you where the two programs stand.

In the immortal words of Martha Stewart, "It's a good thing."

Do we have a healthy backup right now? I remember hearing of at least one FB that was banged up. You can never predict whent he starter is going to go down ::knocks hard on his wooden desk::

Quincy Kelly is the backup. Trevor Bray had a knee operation from a spring injury. He's progressing well and could be ready before the season is finished.

It doesn't matter if you're a scholarship player or a walk-on. You still have to sit out a year when you transfer. That one year counts toward your total of five eligible years.

Cox will have three years to play after he sits out this coming season. The same is true for the Tulsa de.
