Does anyone have any idea what your high school GPA or SAT score has to be to be elligible to play football at Georgia Tech?

They have changed the SAT scoring system. and it varies by sport. Football and Basketball get more flexiblity than non revenue sports. For football I guess a 2.5 gpa and a 850 SAT minimum. Tennis would be a 2.5 gpa and a 1000 SAT minimum.

If you had a higher gpa you could have a lower SAT.

This is from the NCAA website. As for Tech, you have to meet this standard, obviously, and be accepted. From my days at Tech, they always made a big deal out of not having a hard and fast minimum GPA or standardized test score (not just for sports, but everyone). The average used to be for SAT around 1330+ with everyone I knew having at least a high 3 something.

more importantly, you need 4 years math and sciences and 3 years of a language. This is what eliminates most high school sa's.

lowest SATs we have on the team are high 800s, but that was compensated by better GPAs.

We do have some with GPAs in the 2.7ish range....

there is no hard and fast rule. An SA with a 2.5 gpa but took harder classes will get a pass. An SA with a low SAT with a good gpa will get a pass. Each situation is different.

WOW...My son is a Sr. in a Private HS. (a lot harder curriculum than Public schools) and has a Gpa of 3.3 (Was drug down by being at The Walker School his Frosh. year) and he has a 1130 SAT...
He was thinking it would be hard to get into GT , But he wants to go there badly.
He plays Basketball and has a few Small schools that have offered. His HS counselor told him to forget about GT for now with the 3.3 GPA. His ultimate goal is GT though. If he could get in, I think he would forego Bball and go to GT if he could get in..

not to be brutally honest but I will be. Your son has little chance with a 1130 and 3.3 unless he is a scholarship athlete. His counselor is giving him good info

hate to break it to you...but still have him apply u never know.

Your right. Sad thing is, If he had went to the Public school here, he would have had a 4.0 or higher and probably got in.

He will probably get in for his Masters, if he takes care of business in college. One of the small private Christian Colleges that wants him, has a deal with GT that he can transfer in for his Masters after 4 years there. Many of their Grad's have.

just have him transfer after his freshman or sophomore year...assuming he gets good grades. Don't wait for the masters...he will miss his best years of college (undergrad)

If it makes you feel better... I know someone who had a 3.9; 1320 and got rejected....and this person had alot of afterschool activities as well....it just is competitive. You really need high marks in both categories...and even then its not a given.

Yeah, you about have to call in a few favors to key people now, unless you are good enough for that athletic scholly. It wasn't quite as bad a few years back, But, it has gotten very difficult the past few years for various reasons. He may transfer in after Fros. or Soph. year unless he just enjoys his Bball and comes in after 4 to get the Masters.

It has totally changed.

Believe it or not, it is even tough to get into Ugag now, with these type Gpa's and SAT scores. UNLESS, you are a scholarship athlete. It is a shame, for life time Georgia residents and taxpayers that it has come to this.

I graduated H.S. last year and thats what happened to me. I went to a harder high school and didn't get in with a 3.3ish and a 1250 SAT. They do have a transfer system for kids who have family members that attend/attended Tech, which is what I'm currently doing.

But yeah, GT and ugag are pretty much equal in terms of what GPAs and SAT scores they expect...except for ugag is basically because of sheer competitiveness due to the fact everyone seems to think its the greatest thing to happen to this planet. My guidance counselor actually called that place "the Harvard of the South" last year. It made me sick.

It depends on the school too. I went to a smaller private hs and my gpa was pretty good, but my SAT was average for GT. But still got in due to having highest sat in my class.

As for academics at cesspool, no sense in getting into it because its a joke, but Im marrying a mutt gal (who I love dearly, but shes still a mutt :)) and Harvard of the South is not only a disgrace Harvard, but the South.

Keep in mind a few things:

1) GT's requirements are higher for student-athletes than the NCAA req's below.
2) GT's "in reality" requirements for student-athletes are higher than the "bottom line" requirements given below that are in official GT printed guidelines (the 850 SAT and 2.5 GPA) The coaches have been electing (hoops is the only sport I am unsure of) to look for kids over 1000 SAT (old score) and 3.0 GPA..but will go down to 900 SAT (old score) if GPA is about 3.0 and you have "trended up" throughout high school thus showing an ability to study and improve.
3) GT does not include most elective classes, definitely not PE and things like that, when calculating your qualifying GPA.
4) Student-athletes have to remember that GT students average high school GPA's in the 3.7-3.9 range...and SAT in excess of 1370 by the old score. The GT coaches therefore try to make sure they bring in kids that can stay with them if given the appropriate tutoring and study hall environment. They look to see if you did better each year in high school, your general attitude towards academics, and your home support system to push you in that area.

Nate, you'll find even now a significant gap between ugag and GT entering SATs. We are pretty close now to Duke/Stanford with 1350+ avg.

As for football, I have offered uggers a bet many times that if and when SAT nos. are revealed there will be a 100 point difference, especially among the 2-deeps. This equates to a MUCH smaller pool of recruits. We just have to hope we can continue to get more and more exceptions based on classroom success. The last few we got were better players than most already here when they walked off the bus.

Tell him not to give up hope if he gets shot down on his first attempt. Go do some core classes some where else and try to transfer in. It is possible.

There is hope! Apply for either the ESM or textile college (very few applicants) and that should be a ticket to admission. From there he can transfer as desired.

Except that, unlike other schools, Tech accepts students regardless of what school they are applying to.
