What an eye opener. Donnan writes that the unofficial visite seem to be more important than the official visite. Donnan says "it's hard to build a relationship in a 48 hr weekend" on an official visit. It seems there recruiting is mostly done on game days. They reserve 500 tickets for each game just for recruits (& their guests). They may have 200-300 recruits at each game. Extremely interesting article.
Is this why it's soooo hard to recruit nationally? It's much harder to get them in for unofficial visits. Some recruits come over & over to games (free game tickets, but must pay for everything else or stay in dorm with a bud). A great read. Donnan's article on unofficial visits

Jim Don_an may not have been the brightest bulb on the sidelines, but he knows and understands the recruiting process.

Likewise with O'Leary. He was also a master if recruiting as well. But O'Leary did not just go after the flashy high school studs. O'Leary also went after guys that can contribute in such a way, it will have a big impact on the program.

Give me 20 kids that can make the little plays over and over over one kid that makes big plays once in a while.

All in all, a good read.

GO JACKETS!!

Thanks for the link. That really was an interesting article. As others have stated ad nauseum, Donn_n may have been lost on the sidelines at times, but he definitely could recruit well.

Should we forward this article to our staff?

It's interesting that he mentioned kidding Tommy Tuberville. IIRC, Tuberville's Auburn team was responsible for a bad Georgia recruiting debacle in 1999. A 4-5 Auburn team came to Athens and jumped on UGA really hard, 38-0, and some fans in the stands started to scream obscenities at the players. It got kinda ugly as people were yelling stuff over the hedges. I believe some of the recruits saw some of this.

Oh well. It is a good article.

I don't think Donn_n is the idiot that a lot of GT and UGA fans think he is. He has won everywhere he has every coached, with close to a 75% winning percentage. I think Donn_n would still be the coach at UGA if he hadn't recruited Quincy Carter. Quincy proved to not be a big game QB and all of his other QB's transferred. I expect him to get another coaching job if he wants one.

If our staff doesn't have 100 or so recruits, Jrs & Srs, at the BYU game then we should post this article to their office door. Could we be behind on regional recruits because they are going to games elsewhere? Could we be behind on national recruits because they are going to games in their region? This article shows, without a doubt, how recruiting must be done year round & NOT just 'let's wait to see what happens in Feb'. If you're waiting to convince a kid on his official visit about your school, then you are way, way behind. Sure hope Patrick Nix read this peek inside UGa football recruiting.
