"I saw this post on Georgia Tech's board and found it interesting. I think Ga Tech will be a serious threat in the very near future to be an annual top 10 team.
Ok, Ga Tech wins the Paul Johnson sweepstakes. I am happy for Coach Johnson, as I have always been a fan of his, and I'm glad to see him get his shot at a national championship in 1-A.
I know some of you are apprehensive about the triple option, but as a coach myself, I can tell you some things about Paul Johnson's offense that should make you feel better about it.
1) It is NOT the wishbone. In fact, Johnson gets a little miffed when people call it the wishbone or even the flexbone. HE calls it the spread. Why is he capitalized? Because HE invented this offense. Much like Urban Meyer is considered a genious for turning the spread offense into a national sensation, Paul Johnson CREATED this offense under Erk Russell at GSU. GSU has won 5 NC's: all of them with Paul Johnson's offense. Hiring Johnson is like hiring Mouse Davis to run the run and shoot, Emory Bellard to run the wishbone, Tubby Raymond to run the Wing-T or Urban Meyer to run the spread....he is THE authority on triple option football. Just wait until you see the amount of high school coaches that fly across the country to visit the coaching clinics.
2) It is NOT limited. The two most prolific offenses in the history of college football are the wishbone (best ever running offense) and the run and shoot (best passing offense). Johnson's offense is a perfect marriage of the two. He uses wishbone triple option principles of getting 2 on 1 matchups in the run game, but he also has a full arsenal of run and shoot type pass packages...he just couldn't run them at Navy, and he didn't need to run them at GSU because he won 2 NC's without them.
3) It doesn't need 5-star recruits. Face it, GA Tech isn't going to get a Calvin Johnson every year, due to high academic standards and UGA being in the same state and in the SEC. However, the athletes they recruit will be by far the best talent Johnson's ever had to work with, and they will be more than good enough to make this offense click. If Navy's players can average 40 points per game, I see no reason why GT can't average 30 when he gets it going. That's not to say he won't get 5-star receivers, because they will get to shine because 90% of the time, they'll get man to man coverage (BECAUSE of the triple option). He won't get Troy Aikman, but he could easily recruit a Joe Hamilton, Charlie Ward, or Pat White type that were told by USC that they weren't tall enough or thick enough to play QB.
4) You will grow to love it. Mark my words, it will not happen over night, but when he gets it clicking, you'll grow bored watching teams that fling it downfield every play. You'll get a kick out of counting the bodies that hit the ground on a typical run play. Blue Chop linebackers will get pissed off because Tech's lineman get free shots at them all day. You'll love it when you can't find the ball, because normally, the defense can't find it either.
5) Mark Richt is not smiling today. Although UGA doesn't consider Ga Tech their #1 rival, now that end of the season game is a SERIOUS threat. Next year UGA will probably open the season as pre-season #1. They may get through SEC play undefeated and be waiting on the championship game....but he can't enjoy it, because he has to worry about an offense that his team hasn't seen since GSU came to town, and this time it will be run with MUCH better talent. He has to worry about linebackers getting hurt because the OLINE is viscious on their downfield blocks. He has tyo worry about teaching a whole new scheme in a week to stop and offense that will make him look SILLY if his team isn't prepared for it.
6) Paul Johnson wants to win a national championship...period. Otherwise, he would have stayed at Navy. If for some reason he doesn't think his system is the best way to win a national championship, he will change it. However, I think he knows best....he has 4 rings to prove it. 2 as an OC and 2 as a HC.
7) This offense HELPS the defense. Very few 3-and-outs. Opponents get less possessions because of the ball control. Defense gets more rest.
Rest assured, this is a GREAT hire by Ga Tech. I'm going to order my hat and shirt right now. Go Jackets!"
