Greg Smith: "#1 Receiver"

Thanks for the link. Greg Smith has been somewhat of a crowd favorite and it is easy to see the reason. Hard work and serious concentration...signs of a good receiver. Fringe benefit: may inspire others to do the same.

Definately my favorite player now that Mr. Wrotto has moved on to "The League". I think he might be my favorite because of his great family at most practices. Every time I'm at a practice I get to talk to Mr. Smith, and its a honor each time.

I think Greg was hurt some last year that hurt his production. I know he continues to work hard and I hope he is able to prove himself the #1 this fall. Many expect (rightfully so) Johnson to be the number one and Be-Be has gotten a lot of hype so far. I like the fact that Greg continues to work without the hype, and hope that he works under the radar right past the opposing secondary many many times this fall. It will be nice to see him working the middle of the field and breaking tackles again this fall.

Here is to a healthy season for Smith and the rest of the receiving corps in the Post-Calvin era!

I agree about the pub others have recieved in the mags and papers. No one seems to know about Greg, which is fine by me. ;) That dude is super fluid and smooth. He makes everyone miss and get's open at the right time in position to run.

Can tell he's grown from last year. Haven't looked it up, but he sure looks a couple of inches taller.

THis is a tall bunch we have at WR.

This is great news because JJ is a great number two, but I'm not sure he can be the go-to guy.

I know that I can't prove it... I wasn't a member of this board yet...but I called it after the 3rd quarter of the Duke game last year. I saw something special in Greg and thought that he would be a go to guy post Calvin. He always runs hard, he runs fantastic routes, and he is fearless going across the middle. Sounds like a formula for a great wide receiver to me. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do this season. I seriously doubt that our opponents are going to give him near the attention that he deserves and they will pay for it.

Me too. He was clearly TB's favorite target, and caught everything thrown to him.

So who is going to be our possession receiver? Smith and Johnson both seem to be up field guys to me. Who is the guy who can get 7 on 3rd and 6? Thomas? Or maybe Grant getting underneath?

really in this offense its more where they line up than the person. JJ is more possession to me than Smith.

Earls is your streaking deep threat.

Thomas plays both possession and downfield.

Honestly its not so much the person as the position. Look for the slots to be running possession routes (thomas, smith and earls all can play the slot at anytime, and grant).

I agree that JJ is the possession guy. Notwithstanding the dropsies he got at the end of last year, that I think were the result of our former QB hanging him out to dry a few times, he has good hands.

I thought Taylor's INT was intended for Smith? Maybe I am remembering wrong. In any case, I thought it was a bad pass, though at the time others were blaming the receiver.

I hope so. Obviously, we haven't used the middle of the field much lately. So the slot receiver only got a look if he streaked strait up field.

If TB is really in tune with Smith, I suspect he will be the goto guy when we really need yards. I remember a young Joe who would always throw to Middleton when things got tight.

he is in tune with GS, but to me just as much with DT and JJ. Its just, GS is ALWAYS freaking open b/c he runs good routes and is fast. So TB finds him...alot...

I can't remember for sure, but I thought Reggie was the one with the tipped pass and Taylor was the one with the bad INT.

/shrug

Reggie threw a jump ball into triple coverage. From my vantage point it looked like Taylor led the receiver too much and put it right into the Duke defender's arms.

Just to add one more foggy memory. I thought Taylor's INT was because the receiver broke outside on his route after reading the coverage (which was wrong). Taylor threw to the inside (the right read); the safety was hit pretty squarely with the ball.

I remember thinking at the time that the receiver was probably used to breaking outside because Reggie rarely passed to the middle of the field. You practice the routes your QB can throw, not the ones that are good on paper.

That is my recollection as well. The receiver (not Calvin) broke off his route. Was it JJ? He did that a lot against UGAg and WF.

This was the 2nd half of Duke, all the skill players and some of the linemen were 2nd-string. I'm pretty sure it was either Greg Smith or Dunlap.

Thanks guys, for clearing this up for me. I had a discussion about it last year, me thinking it was Bennett's error and others saying the receiver's, but the bit about the receiver misreading the coverage was not explained to me at that time.
