First off, I was at Bobby Dodd today, and our team really did a great job of picking up the offense in the second half.
That being said....
Greg Smith did not have a good game today. He had a blown option play where he ran up field and hung jaybo out to dry. He missed 2 key blocks that I saw. He ran one pitch straight into the DB that Melton was blocking. He doesn't like to turn it into the middle of the field.
Before this season started, I thought Greg would really shine for us at A-back. I thought he would be a 500 rushing/500 receiving type of guy. But after this game, I think he is at best, our 4th best A-back.
Do you guys think Greg can straighten this out, or is he just a WR trying to play A-back? You can tell he has a lot of talent, but it just isn't clicking for him. Do we move him back to WR when we get more A-back talent?
I hope Greg picks it up. We need every player to execute to make this thing work. Another blown play like that one today, and we might be minus one of our QB's.

He's a WR playing A-back. He's not used to following blockers or looking for holes.

Nice observation. I kinda/sorta feel ya on what you're saying. The bottom line is Paul Johnson already sees and already knows. Thats the great thing about having a REAL football coach. He's already got it sussed out. Greg has skills but so do our next class. He may be on the bench next year. CPJ knows what he's doing. Let's see what he does. Remember. We have a football coach. Send him an e-mail. Stop by his office.

WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE THIS GUY. Paul Johnson, folks. He's our football coach. Hello?

He'll figure this A back thing out or go back to WR. He's too good of an athlete to not get a shot to play.

careful, you can't criticize players after a win.

Pure speculation, but I think he wanted to switch because he thought he'd see more touches in this offense, which is probably right. And I think we needed the depth.

I bet he's back at WR next year.

It appears to be a confidence problem. I think an extra 10lbs of muscle from hard work in the weight room next off season should provide the cure.

I think we need a breakaway runner at a-back. So far it is the weakest position. I know we must have a rising star somewhere but they have not surfaced yet. I have confidence in PJ to help ths problem along. God Bless JD because he is our stud at B-Back and A-back.

Roddy Jones is a breakaway runner...and he can catch the long pass downfield.

When Bebe caught that 80+yarder, Roddy was wide open as well down the middle of the field. He will be a fine back at that position. I think Cox is blocking decent for an Aback, but we don't have many choices at that position......yet. We will see how Peeples and M Wright turn out.

Greg is playing timid.

I'd like see him go all-out while making a mistake (blocking the wrong man) than have him seem hesitant.

Just hit somebody and hit them hard!

Am I wrong here?

I wouldn't mind seeing him back out a WR. He is fast and he would probably block a corner a whole lot better than a LB.

In addition to Peeples and Wright, we will see how Roddy turns out to. Don't forget he's only a R-FR. These guys are still figuring this stuff out.
