GT/Clem game now a pick\'em. Will GT be favored...

... by kickoff?

Clearly, the betting masses saw GT plus 2 to 3 points as a good bet, and the line has shifted to equalize the betting (which is always the objective of the bookies, who don't want to risk any $, but rather make money on the juice.

None of this has anything more than a very indirect relation to any "expert" opinion of what will actually happen in the game, as many will infer.

Personally, however, I like to watch what the "smart money" does on Saturday AM. But, I don't wager.

Trying to decide whether to deposit $500 in an account so I can get LIVE odds updates for "free." Problem is, you have to put 3 times that amount "in action" before you can withdraw it. Don't want to rekindle my betting habit from years ago. Habits start like a slippery slope, and breaking them is like climbing a mountain.

Anybody remember the movie "The Gambler" is which the lead character stops at a phone booth to bet on a GT game? Not one of my favorite movie references to GT, but like they say in the business, the name of the game is getting your name mentioned (good or bad). :-)

Anybody pay for the live odds at this site, or another one? Would love to see how the line is moving more often than once a day, but can't bring myself to tie up $500 to get the live odds for free, since I don't wager.

G'timer you are a gentleman and a scholar to speak of wagering as you have done, I know the feeling well myself; You can't eat just one!

The referenced movie, The Gambler, came out in '74 with James Cann in the lead role as an addicted gambler on a roller coaster ride of good and bad luck, ending in all bad luck. He begged his mother for her life savings to pay off gambling debts owed to guys who will kill you if you don't pay, then gambled it away before he paid it off. (She should have paid them off directly, but you know how loving mothers are - hard to show "tough love").

Up in Maryland, where I used to live, I was always tickled to see a warning about how addictive gambling can be on the side of every state lotto machine, with an 800 number to call if you have a problem. Isn't this like inviting drunks into liquor stores and having posters about alcohol addiction on the wall? The world is full of hypocrisy. I used to tell a joke about calling the 800 number and telling the "counselor" that I was sure I could not be cured. When she replied, "I'll bet you can" I replied, "OK, you're on. How about a grand?" ;-)

Since horse racing is (or was) big in that part of the country, I tried to develop a "system" to win on the ponies. I bought all the books claiming to have systems, visited all the web sites, subscribed to a number of services, developed complicated spreadsheets with fancy mathematics; and still some dumb horse who couldn't read his odds would run too fast and screw up the system ;-)

So, I give up wagering long ago, but know the "pilot light" (I like challenges in general, and it's a challenge to beat the spread) of desire is still burning, so I have to avoid giving it any gas.

Goldtimer,

You can also see the betting line moving through out the day if you have access to a Bloomberg machine. If not, you don't need to put up a few thousand dollars, you can open an acct. w/basically nothing on a sportsbook.com or betoninternet.com type of site.

As for the "smart" $ moving a line a few hours before kickoff, smart $ also moves early lines that look off. Clemson's injuries to its starting RT and RB added up to look like GT should not be getting any points in this matchup that could go either way.

Vegas sets the initial line to attempt to get equal action and make $ on the juice; the bettors set the final line.
