First time poster, guys….have browsed the site for awhile now- I think I enjoy reading posts more than creating them, but I thought I’d drop in today with a few comments about the Jackets. Loved GT since kindergarten, winning the National Title that year must have secured my support as a fan, although I didn’t realize at the time what a national title meant.

I have gone to games regularly since ’96 and those of you who have gone to many games (or even watched on TV), you kind of get a ‘feel’ for how the game is going and after the first quarter or so, you generally know how the game is going to wind up…maybe not necessarily the exact outcome, but you sense how the rest of the game will play out. Even with the new coaching staff, philosophy, team personality, etc., your GT football 6th sense kicks in during the game and you get the feeling, “okay, we’re going to get a good drive and score on this possession, I can feel it’ or ‘I can tell we’ve got some momentum and our defense is going to make a huge stop on this drive’. Sometimes when in a close game, and if Tech isn't playing particularly well, you still know they'll pull it out...or the flip side, and just know they don't have it in them today and pull this off.

It seems the team this year is a little less predictable. With Clemson, when up 14-3, I was confident that Tech would hold them off, but was a little weary due to it being on the road and in an unusual environment with the coaching changes and the spectacle that was Dabo Sweeney. Last week, initially a little worried about a trap game, but up 14-3 again, at home, my 6th sense told me, ‘okay, we’re in control, we’ll eat clock, put a few more points on the board, and ultimately keep them in check.' I thought we would waltz right into the FSU game….didn’t see a defeat coming at that point.
My 6th sense failed me completely….I guess fumbling can do that.

So, in the last 3 weeks, Tech has struggled against Gardner-Webb, and has given up a 14-3 lead twice, losing one of those. This leads to my 2 questions for everyone:

2. Does this team get complacent and only run this offense effectively when opening a game (coming off of pre-game excitement) and when their backs are up against a wall? (late comeback vs BC, comeback vs VT, coming out of the gates firing vs MissSt., responding to a slow start vs Duke with huge 2nd half, rallying to take lead back vs Clemson and UVA. It seems that when a fire is lit or that there is energy, the offense clicks….but when resting on a lead or in less crucial points in the game, it seems that the offense sputters.

2. How has your GT 6th sense served you thus far this season?

I look forward to being on the boards more in the future and talking about GT sports with everyone. I’m excited about this team and program and with what I have said above, my 6th sense is telling me we’re going to show up against FSU and play with more intensity than we have all year. Go Jackets!

I think the offense gets a little complacent. They don't really play with any urgency. I think the GW and Clemson games lulled the team into thinking that comebacks and wins were automatic.

CPJ's offense isn't "three yards and a cloud of dust". It is a big play offense. But the QB has to constantly look for the big play. I don't think Nesbitt gets that yet. When we have the lead, he tends to hand the ball to Dwyer. If he does keep it, he doesn't pitch it out enough (and he doesn't sell the fullback dive). He simply plays it safe. If we had TT's offense, he would be dumping the ball off to the running back.

I think his problems with fumbling are the cause. Once he gets more comfortable, he won't have to concentrate on reads so much and he will fumble less. Once he fumbles less, he will be more willing to take risks.

Personally I think this is all wishful thinking. Like when you're saying to yourself "interception, interception": and we pick off a pass. If there was truly a way to measure how you're sixth sense it would show that you're wrong as often as you're right.

On the complacency thing, it may happen from time to time, but more often it's a result of on field adjustments, injuries, missed assignments, etc. Just because a guy makes a mistake doesn't mean he's complacent....sometimes he just gets beat.

i think it is somewhat related to being a young team. when they get up, they relax instead of laying down the hammer; they dont yet quite realize how hard it is to get the edge back when you have let it go...

I think the last couple of weeks the O was prepared for the INITIAL gameplan but when we had to make adjustments to THEIR adjustments the team has struggled.

I hope that through film study some of these issues will be resolved

My GT 6th sense was correct against Uva. I had a gut feeling all day that Uva was on a mission and that we would be flat. I even called the fumble on the goalline. I told my dad right before the play started that we would fumble. After Uva recovered he gave me the worst eat sh** look ever and said I jinxed it.
My GT 6th sense was also correct against VT. I had a gut feeling we would outplay them everywhere except the scoreboard and they would win on a special teams play or questionable call.
On the other hand...I thought we would blow out Duke by halftime and that Miss state would be a low scoring slugfest.
So who knows???

I think you may be on to something here, but for a slightly different reason imo.

When we do get kind of complacent, that's when we mess up....BECAUSE this offense is not 2nd nature to us yet. (Tech isn't capable of running the 3-O in its sleep just yet = UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY).

If our guys aren't focusing on their assignments....as in losing concentration on drives where we technically don't NEED to score...it really does seem that's when the fumbles and shiite muslimish blocking starts.

I don't know. We sure as hell were complacent last year.

Still shaking the rust off, perhaps.

My football 6th sense was in high gear also. I saw dead football players who didn't know they were dead. TIC

Interesting question. My intuition was pretty true in the Gailey era. The team was ready and played well some games and played very flat at other times. There were few surprise after watching first ten minutes.

So far this year, this team is harder to predict. I think they try hard all the time. But, they lost a game I thought they played very well at Va Tech. I could not see the bad second half coming against Gardner-Webb. And, after 14 points early against UVA I did not expect the offense to become totally ineffective.

It will be interesting to see more of CPJ's teams in action.
