Norcross' Luke Snider, Dacula's Josh Warren and Duluth's Iain Vance have decided to take the walk-on path at Georgia Tech. Here's an excellent article from Will Hammock of the Gwinett Daily Post on today's preferred W-O.
The preferred w-o guys are treated pretty much the same as the scholarship guys. They just have to figure out how to pay for the tuition & a room. If they're from Georgia & have a 3.0, the tuition part is taken care of. Also, which is rarely pointed out, the GT coaching staff helps the w-o players find scholarship & grant money. This money is availiable for applicants, but parents & players rarely know how to find it. The GT coaches do know how to find & apply for it.
Anyways, a very good column for football fans.

GT's new preferred walk-ons

We are inching closer to the Ivy League! No football scholarships are given there.
By the way, who will be stronger next year, Dook or Brown? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I say welcome to these young men. They may just work harder and show better than the ones we competed for. At least they have something to prove.

Not sure where you are going, all schools get 20 preferred walk-on's. UGA has already signed several as well...many from Gwinnett County.

btw...Will Heller (NFL-Bucs), Nick Ferguson (NFL-Broncos), Nathan Burton, Travis Bell, Ben Arndt, PJ Daniels, Andrew Economos (NFL-Jaguars)etc. were recent walk-on's.

I am not saying you build a program off it. But if you do it well you can have some pleasant surprises and build local high school relations.

Sorry.

I understand the importance of walk-ons, and always have. I especially understand why we need them now. I am happy for the guys getting their opportunity, and I would bet that they will leave nothing in the tank. They will most likely be supremely motivated.
For this, I appreciate the hard work that these guys are going to give us. We need them!!

My comment was meant to be cynical only. Hence the /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
I am cynical at the moment for the fear I have of the possible direction our Grand Poo-bah wants to take the program.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thought this was interesting

& ya'll might think it's interesting, too. Here's the Region 7-AAAAA All-Region team as picked by the Region's coaches. On the 1st team are GT W-Os Josh Warren-Dacula & Luke Snider-Norcross.
On the 2nd team are UGa's W-Os Kevin Morrison-Collins Hill & John Ruskell-Duluth. Also, on the 2nd team is UGa's recent 'great' signee fullback Fred Munzenmair-Norcross.
The Region 7-AAAAA coaches thought that 2 of GT's preferred W-Os were better football players than a Bulldog scholarship recruit. The coaches thought that 3 players from Norcross deserved All-Region while the Dog signee, from Norcross, deserved 2nd team.
It also pts out that the GT W-O program is ahead of the UGa W-O adendum. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif The talent of High School players is surely in the eye of the beholder, isn't it???

All-Region 7-AAAAA

P.S. Duluth's Iain Vance is a placekicker /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Thought this was interesting

Ace, this is Very interesting.

For you and the other resident recruiting experts, please tell me what you know about this:
Based on what you have reported about these players, it would seem clear that they would have scholarship offers somewhere.
Because of the Hope scholarship and other available funding, is it possible for in state guys like these preferred W-Os to receive the equivalent of a full, or near full ride?
I would think that nearly every in state Tech football recruit would qualify for the Hope already.
Please shed some light on this.

Okay

Going into Spring Practice:
Barrett, Brooks, J Davis, T Davis, Folkner, Garside, Harris, James, T Jones, Kamp, Liipfert, Mooneyham, Oetter, Palmer, Paquette, Rogers, Sanborn, Scurry, Andrew Smith, Ware, White & Yahiaoui.

GT can have as many players as the coaches want to practice in the Spring. GT can only have 105 players on the Fall camp roster we take to Aug practices. Presuming that Tech has 79 scholarship players, there can be 26 walk-on Yellow Jackets.
Here is the Yellow Jackets Spring roster. The only mistake I saw was that Lonowski will be a rSo. It's a shame that Guyton, Jones & Robertson are Jrs already. Oh well, that's the way Gailey wants it.

From a non-expert opinion

As noted in the original article, these kids did have scholarship offers, but had rather stay in-state &/or get a great education for their football part-time job.
It is not only possible to receive scholarship money, but highly likely to be the same as a 'ship player.
A major problem @ Tech is that u must 'maintain' a 3.0 ave to receive the Hope after the Fr yr. A few 'ships & grants require this, as well. Many scholarships that are out there don't require 'maintaining' a 3.0 in order to receive the 'ship. A good 'ship & the player doesn't even need the Hope.
There are many, many, many scholarships availiable for GT students, if u know where to search & find. If u need money to attend GT there are people @ GT who will help u get it!

Also, don't believe the myth that it's impossible to get dropped 5 times by GT & still graduate. Where there's a will, there's a way!)

[/ QUOTE ]

If this applies to you (or anybody), I am definitely impressed!
If so, continue to hang in there.
On a side and personal note, probably the greatest value I have received from my Tech degree 23 years ago is believing that there is nothing I can't accomplish somehow, someway.
There are times I have a nightmare that I receive a letter from Tech saying that I really didn't graduate. I have my diploma in eye sight just to comfort me.
If this does not apply to you, I feel good just writing what I did.

Re our football situation and what you have written, I know that players have a legitimate need to know they were offered a scholarship. However, if what you say is all true, we can bring in many more quality in state players on "scholarship" without having to worry about ncaa scholarship sanctions,....Right?

So does this mean we are catching up with them? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

Re: Okay

Thanks Ace!

The reason I'm asking is that during a staff meeting at work just this past Thursday my immediate manager told me and everyone else in the meeting (only me and the manager are GT grads) that our senior manager's son, a senior at an east Cobb high school, is walking on this fall. Is there another list of walk-ons other than these invitees?

Anyone have any idea how many walk on's ever really make it into a starting role on the football team in the past few years? I think PJ was the big one. I am guessing alot of special teams players...

I think this is actually a common thing with Tech grads... something about the hell we get put through really messes with us. I know more than a few friends of mine relate the same or similiar dream. Kinda funny, kind of sad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

Re: From a non-expert opinion

I don't see AT Barnes listed on that roster.
