Watching Charlie Whitehurst (Duluth) come into the UVa game for Clemson and march the Tigers right down the field for 6 late in the game made me think about GT's recruiting of Charlie and David Greene. We were fairly involved with both (different years obviously), but then backed off of Green because we had other commitments at QB that we prefered, and then backed off of Whitehurst too I think. Can anyone verify this?

Greene is aided by a solid o-line and mucho talent at WR, but Whitehurst was quite impressive for a true freshman. It just seems amazing that GT could let these two local products get away. Whitehurst really looks like the real deal, and looks to be better than Simmons (another one that got away from us).

Anyone have the scoop on their recruitment?

Don't know the answer to your good question, but would like to add an additional comment. Tech should make the metro Atlanta high schools its farm system, where it becomes tough for any other school to steal one from us in the metro area. Treat the local coaches and their wives real good. Make them feel very special. Involve the area S-A's in everything legally possible. Know the middle school and rec. league coaches..treat them good also, and get them involved with informing our staff about young talent. NO ONE should know metro Atlanta football better that Ga. Tech! Why recruit a guy in Washington State when there are probably 3 like him, with grades, right here in the North metro area?
.
Boy's High and Tech High used to be our farm system when life was simplier in Atlanta. The same system, on a bigger scale, can still work.

BOO

Greene chose the dawgs over us. Word was that Fridge was very high on him but he wanted to go to Athens. I believe he was an early commit (in the fall). I don't remember the story on Whitehurst, but that year we signed Bilbo, Landry and R. Johnson at QB.

Cyclejacket is right.

We tried to get Greene. He went to the dark side. GOL talked about how he thought Greene would be a very good college QB, and that he was underrated.

We did not go hard after Whitehurst, who was not rated that highly at all. He also was a fairly early commit to the tiggers.

It would be interesting to see our QB position right now if Andy Hall had stayed. I thought he bolted a bit early at the time.

Also, for the life of me I cannot figure out why Brian Camp has not been given any snaps. He has spent more time with this offense than either of the other 2, and has always looked good with his decision making in practices. Doesn't have the biggest arm, but I would have thought he would have been given a chance, if Bilbo "doesn't know the offense" and Suggs has been struggling.

Whitehurst will be all-conference. Simmons is just a roadblock.

I do know that we were stll involved with Greene in mid-November, but by the 1999 Uga game at BDS@HGF he had begun to lean to Uga and committed shortly there after. I thought we backed off, but must have been the other way around. Now, Whitehurst was one we did back off of due to the other recruits. I gotta say that Whitehurst really got my attention Saturday. Clemson fans should be pushng for him to play much more.
