There is an ESPN.com "Insider" article with this title. But...I'm not an insider and am too cheap to pay the membership to read this one article.

Any "insiders" that would care to give the rest of us an overview of the article.

I'm really interested in light of what is going on with our defense over the last 2 games.

Defense to be simplified

Georgia Tech has won its last three games, but over the last two weeks the Jackets gave up more than 1,000 yards of offense. That's too much for coach Paul Johnson, who plans to simplify personnel groupings to cut down on the number of players from running on and off the field.

"What I'm saying is you need to be good at something," Johnson said. "When you play as poorly as we played, there's enough stuff to go around everywhere. Certainly the players have to be accountable. We have to be accountable as coaches when it looks like they don't know what they're doing."

hey, the last time we simplified we did great. But is this simplification another simplification on the previous one? Or did we complicate for the MSU and FSU games and now reverting back to the defensive strategy we had against UNC?

Nesbit is obviously the toughest SOB on the team; couldn't he play the other DE? It would save him the effort of running on and off the field at every change of possession!

AJC has a more descriptive article if you'd want to read more about it

So essentially we are going to reduce the excessive substitutions to reduce confusion. I agree with this move because our defense seemed out of position on numerous occasions. On many plays, the defense didn't even seemed lined up correctly before FSU would snap the ball. I think much of that was due to substitutions. Hopefully this will fix some of the problems.

Get our best 11 on the field in a 4-3 package. Don't rotate them, unless obvious passing down, or they are gassed.

And no tricky assignments in coverages, just let em play without 'thinking'.

They said vs. UNC it was all fun, no thought, and that against Miami it was freaking out and trying to remember coverages.

I think that's what has been happening is that the substitutions are getting to their heads and they have to re-settle into the game

The coach could not possibly please me more than to say this. Simplify the schemes, get the best players on the field, and get 'em to go full speed. A right plan for VPI.

Our best 11 would line up in a 3-3-5.

I wish we could find some happy medium between the conservative defensive style (Wommack) and an agressive, attacking defense (Tenuta). I loved watching Tenuta's defenses play, and they still are fun to watch and effective now that they're coming out of the 3-4 at ND. The big problem with Tenuta was that the offense could never hold the ball, and by the 4th quarter, the defense was gassed from basically running suicides all night. I think now that we have an offensive scheme that controls the clock effectively, an attack based defense would be effective. I'm a fan of the 3-4 though, in the age of the spread it seems to be an advantage to have that extra speed on the field, at least it works pretty well for Alabama. We have the size and talent to play a 3-4 line, with Morgan and Barnes and the rest of the crew. I'm not saying that we should completely change the defense that drastically, just my opinion of what I'd like to ideally see, a defense with the attitude, firepower, and nastiness of the CPJ spread option offense.

Let him play safety. Blitz the other 10. If the QB gets the pass off, just have Nesbitt rip it out of the carrier's hands.

And don't forget that Egbuniwe was out for F$U but will be back for VT.

That will help. If we don't pressure Taylor, we cannot win this game. I don't expect too many "coverage sacks" in this game - but we do need to flush him out of the pocket.

I keep seeing the last play of their Nebraska game playing over and over in my head.

i'm assuming with coop in the mix....

could you please lay out(player wise) exactly what this mix would be.

and, do you think this is a scheme that we'd be good at? i don't feel it would be one that we'd know well enough to play without "thinking" and at full speed....

get the best players in the best scheme(one they know best). and let them make plays.

not trying to object. just want to get more of your feelings on the 3-3-5 and why it would be effective.
thanks.

We played a 3-3-5 for stretches of the 2nd half vs FSU, at least that's what I've read. I haven't gone back to check the tape.

Take the 3 best of these:
Derrick Morgan
TJ Barnes
Logan Walls
Izaan Cross

Take the best 3 of these:
Brad Jefferson
Julian Burnette
Sed Griffin
Anthony Barnes

Take the 5 best of these:
Morgan Burnette
Cooper Taylor
Dominique Reese
Rashad Reid
Mario Butler
Jerrard Tarant

And roll 3 subs each play, one on each list.

burnett, morgan and jefferson i see playing as much as possible. would a 1 player rotation get them enough rest?

wouldn't the players then have to be thinking much more about responsiblilities? b/c it seems like you'd be rotating so much that the guys would need to know every position in their rotation.

guess its not THAT difficult...

I don't think we'll be seeing 5 defensive backs on Saturday since we'll be facing Ryan Williams who is the #6 RB in the nation in rushing YPG. Beamer knows exactly what our weaknesses are on defense. While Tyrod has shown that he has an arm in their past two games, Beamer is going to try to run the ball on us to keep the ball away from our offense (like LSU did last year) and also to setup for the huge play-action plays.

The problem I'm guessing with our defense is that the "scheme" doesn't seem to allow our guys to play the game without thinking too much about it. It's like giving a system too many conditionals or variables to consider so it slows things down tremendously. Since the Clemson game, coaches have been saying that our defensive players were out of position or got their assignment wrong so they gave up a lot of plays. While they never pointed out specific players, I'm going to use Morgan as an example because he got beat a few times on some huge passing plays against Clemson, Miami, and FSU. I think we all know Morgan is a tremendous athlete and has natural instincts for the ball but he seems a step or two slower than last year and the only thing I can attribute that to is that he's been given too many responsibilities.

Coming into this season, our defensive weakness was obviously the line. Our linebackers and secondary should have been the strength of the defense. Instead, it's as if we've been trying to normalize the talent across the entire defense to make up for specific weaknesses instead of playing to our strengths. It's unbelievable to me how many times I've seen our defensive backs bite on the play-action.

After our loss to Miami, CPJ said that he will take the offense back to the basics. The offense has improved significantly since then. While coaches have said that they will "simplify" our defense after Miami and FSU, I really hope they take the defense back to basics and let the guys that already know how to play, play the game. Otherwise, they are sacrificing and coaching down what I feel is a lot of athleti**** and talent we have on the defensive side of the ball.

If we don't pressure him he will be a pocket passer, something in the past he has not been efficient as.

This was why I said 4-3. VPISU is going to run until we stop them. Then Taylor will stand in the pocket until it breaks down and scramble/pass on the move.

That's their offense.

If we stop Williams I think we have an advantage because TT's best passes come when he's out on the edges. The edges of our DLine are the ONLY strength on DLine that we have. The tackles aren't worth a crap. Although Anderson did bust into the backfield once or twice against FSU, although I think that was more of a missed block by FSU then great penetration by Ben.
