ArchiTECH posted this at the end of a pretty dead thread on Jim Grobe, but here it is again for what it's worth - seems important to ArchiTECH. There was info about it on this board some weeks ago and in the Minutes of a GT / BOR Committee meeting. Anyway her (hee, hee) goes:

What do you guys think of the talk (and inertia) regarding the GTAA giving up it's autonomy to the Board of Regents?

ArchiTECH is no poli-scientist, but doesn't that put Board of Regents folks (read "U(sic)GA grads and supporters) generally in charge of who coaches football at the Flats.

The money Tech and the GTAA save in turning over control to the BOR will be (in ArchiTECH's humble opinion) is potentially disastrous to Tech athletics and a VERY piss poor way to save money. Who do you think UGA and the UGA Board of Regents would like as Tech's football coach? Do you think the BOR will be supportive of firing a 7-5 coach at Tech? I think they will like St. Richt at the their shrine and CCG at our house.

love,
ArchiTECH

Very, very bad idea.

Don't like the idea, but the board isn't as one-sided as you'd expect.

8 from the cow collidge
5 from our distinguished Institute
1 from Clark
1 from Spelman
1 from Pitt
1 from Florida

I think you'd hear some major **** from inside the board, if anything untoward occurred. And it looks like the HBCs from down the road have the swing votes.

Board of Regents would screw us...

They took away the "business" and other degrees from Tech in the 50s and 60s and have seen fit not to reinstate them...dont trust the BOR under any circumstance...If you think the swing voters care about Tech Football then you are sadly mistaken.

Just another f@#$ up by the VPI boys Braine and Clough. The state of Georgia and the state of Virginia do not act the same way. Will they ever figure that out?

This was DRad's idea and I think Clough supports it fully. Very, very bad plan IMHO.

GTAA and Board of Regents - Demjackets opinion?

I would like to get Demjackets take on this....

This is the first I've heard of it.

Dem?

I'm having sort of mixed reviews on it right now, I dont think the board will be one sided though. For what its worth I was not in favor, I wont shoot it down though till I see it in action. They wont be making the coaching decisions either.

If I'm not mistaken, the AD hires and fires the coach's, the pres retains near autocratic veto powers and the board approves the hirings, but can't initiate a termination.

Regardless, having the board of regents with more power over these decisions than they currently posses gives me pause. Kind of like bending over to pick up the soap in a uga frat house communal shower - not a guaranteed negative outcome, but the probability of something bad happening is higher than I would like.

Didn't the BOR force us to sell our radio station WGST because of jealousy by the leg humpers. The leg humping BOR said that a government sponsored (tax supported) business was against the law. Now that we have a hotel, I expect that the same issue will arise when the jealousy reaches critical mass. In any regards, tell the BOR to leave us alone. They already slice the financial support pie the way they want it. Never give away your rights to people who are jealous against your school.

And here I thought you were talking about turning over our AA to BarrelORum. WOW, I can be really dumb sometimes...Mike

Please let's just go private and get it over with already. Don't take anything PRIVATE and turn it back to crooked people.

What is the benefit that DRAD expects to come from this type move? I can't see any.

I don't know the details as regards the BOR, but GT going "private" would hurt the Institute, and mainly athletics, far worse than leaving the SEC.

It was my understanding from his talks that his basic goal here is to roll the employees into the State's benefits programs as opposed to funding them as an essentially small business.

If they had no hire/fire control I'd be fine with it. I definitely don't want a nadlicker council assigning us football coaches.

There is no free lunch. If our GTAA payroll or benefits shifted to the BOR, then there would be a corresponding reduction in our slice of the pie that would be even greater than the shifted amount. Additionally, we would lose some control to the leg-humping regents.

That idea may have worked for LSU's benefit because it was king in Louisiana. But we do not even have kingship in Atlanta, much less the whole state. Personally, I don't want Drad to come here for a short stint, destroy our program, and then leave our program in shambles when he returns to LSU. Trading control for money is not the way to go.

Maybe in the short term, but not in the long term. Why do schools like Princeton, Harvard, and MIT have huge amounts of money at their disposal? Because they take their inventions and make big bucks off of them.

Additionally, Tech is #1 for percentage of graduates donating for a public school and yet it has little money. I suspect that since we give so much, the BOR can direct money elsewhere. Your donations are funding the University of Georgie.

Look around. How many University Systems/BOR are dominated by the state's 2nd school instead of their flagship? Do you believe Tech is the state's flagship school? If not, why would you give ANYTHING back to a group of politicians who's primary interest is to build up the 2nd school?
