GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

Middle of the page in the following link.

What Hollis conveniently omitted was that the tickets were purchased by one of our own to prevent them from falling into the hands of someone even less deserving or charitable. The eBay user Dawgfever03 was likely also one of our own (profile showed a new user with zero feedback) trying to make a point to the GTAA.

The bottom line is that Paul Griffin and Braine-dead still miss the point of the Lettermen's Club.

Glad you pointed out this BS

Re: GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

They don't miss the point, we do. Did you read his quote. "...It operated just like we expected it to." I take that to mean they intended to stick it to some Tech fan to get more revenue all along. The Letterman's Club is a perk to be auctioned in the name of the Braine Fly Fishing retirement fund. These people give one hoot about what Tech fans consider important or hold dear.

Re: GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

How do you guys feel about schools selling off rights to ride on the team bus to and from games, such as Michigan does? Just asking, no agreeing with any of this.

Re: GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

A friend of mine with whom I share the gameday experience and who lettered at GT in the early fifties and is a member of the club was pretty ticked. It really had little to do with the possibility of whose hands the tickets ended up in as it did with the sentiment of the offer.

According to his report of the reactions from others in the club, most were equally offended.

As well, the new digs are not as nice as the old ones (smaller, no inside seating [maybe that comes later,] smaller tables, smaller restrooms with less capacity [one urinal, one stool,] one line at the buffet) under the west stands but the dues went up. And all this from a gentleman who really does not complain about much.

Re: GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

This all comes back to Dave Braine.

I wonder, if we have a good outcome to the football season, the heat will be turned down on Braine? Speaking for a legion of one, I would be happy to donate to a legit fund for ridding Tech of this guy.

Meanwhile, I'll cheer for the Team (composed of both players and coaches).

I doubt my views on Braine will change regardless of the football team's record, but doesn't this go back to your previous position that as long as Tech makes money Braine has fulfilled his job? Any amount of alienation of alums, fans, and previous lettermen can be ignored if Tech makes money?

% visiting fans, empty club seats, discouraging tailgating, ebay, etc are all "just the way it was supposed to work"-Paul Griffin Asst AD...

There's been much criticism and speculation over the experience and competence of the assistant football coaches that have been chosen by the head coach- has anyone ever looked at the support staff put together by our AD? The quote from Mr. Griffin apparently sums up the ebay strategy.

Many friends of mine who are Clemson alums personally attribute the fall of Clemson football both on the field and financially to Bobby Robinson who is now our Senior Asst AD. According to some outside consultant hired to study Clemson's AD, the program is running or will be running in the red but yet all was fine under Mr. Robinson's watch. Why did Braine hire him?

The point is, let's hope the sucession plan lies outside the current organization.....

Re: GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

How is this any different than selling out AMC to McDonalds for 10 yrs...I hated that far more than these premium seat packs that are basically the norm for ALL decent seats at schools that have more sweaters than seats.

Re: GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

Just curious (but really is a serious question)...

How cozy is our current AD and staff with the university Pres? Does the current administration believe that the AD is doing a great job? In reality, is he a 'Golden Boy' (pardon the pun)?

Here's my rationale for asking:
My daughter tells me that UGA boards are full of Anti-Adams (UGA Pres) criticism and chatter. Lot of disgruntled folks posting internet comments about him. She follows to say that their opinions do not seem to matter much, i.e., the Governor and Board of regents appear to be happy with him. Therefore, the university administration just keeps moving their agenda forward and the message posters just keep griping. I'm seeing RVers and Tailgaters coming under attack at UGA, i.e. will probably become a dying breed over time. Or if it does continue to exist... fans will definitely have to 'pay' to 'play'. Being a loyal fan just may become too cost prohibitive over time for most.

I too find the idea of 'selling the university' offensive. However, if the AD has alienated the fan base and can't sell the tickets... he probably believes he has to make up the short-fall somewhere.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">The difference is, at least in the letterwinner's club situation, that the members of the club 1) earned the right by winning a letter at GT and 2)pay dues.

What is being auctioned is the privilege to "rub shoulders" with the men and women in a setting that should be exclusive to them and their guests.

I'm with you on the McAMC set-up, but this is different.

2ndgenjacket,

I don’t remember ever taking a “the money justifies the means” position, except with the driest of sarcasm. It is ALL about money.

With a bit of modesty, it was my recommendation to seek out Pfizer to sponsor the sports training & conditioning center; IIRC I suggested it be named the Viagra Center for Stronger, Longer-lasting Performance…..

Buzz Bomb,

Dave Braine and Clough were buddies at Virginia (or was it Virginia Tech?). This led to Braine’s position as AD.

Re: GTAA got lucky with the Lettermen\'s Club seats

On the Robinson hire, I don't know the details of his time at Clemson, but my understanding is that his job with GTAA is managing facilities. I don't see that as a key position in GTAA.

My take on Braine is that he's done pretty good overall in his coaching hires and our facilities are much improved under his watch (how much of that is him I don't know). The academic changes that helped lead to the loss of 10 FB players is a definite negative, but IMO that had to come from higher than the AD. He may have supported it, but no AD can make that kind of call on their own. He has floated some truly bad ideas (Ugag in the dome) and others that I think are actually interesting that the fan base reacted negatively to (FSU in Jax). I think that's part of his job but he doesn't show much common sense in how he goes about it.

The Lettermen's club fiasco is just stupid and that's the kind of stuff that bothers me. There's no way the money involved is worth the hit to our image and the ill-will of the Letter winners. It just makes no sense to do it and it makes you wonder about somebody who would even suggest it. How long can he keep pissing everybody off?

Thanks for the info. This logically tells me that any current alum and/or fan dissatisfaction with Braine will probably not get much attention or play time in the President's office. The guy was hand-picked by Clough.
