Guarding the T

The best part is that it's completely obvious that the T is way newer than any of the other letters.

I could figure out a way to get that guy to abandon his post. I kinda wanna leave after work now and drive to Blacksburg.
 
Let's be honest, this is probably the same guy that used to guard their empty trophy case before they did away with it.
 
Seems like you could climb it from behind, lower a cord with a slip knot to synch around the T, then stick down a pry bar to break it loose and lift it up. The guard would turn around to check on it and it would be gone. You'd need a loud distraction - a Corvette revving the engine near the guard or something.

You could also just chip off some paint, run over to Home Depot and match the color, then run back and paint it with a roller to match the wall.
 
Create a distraction. Set a garbage can on fire, and the overzealous guard will rush to go check it out and find a fire extinguisher. That will give you about 2-3 minutes to work on the T. 1-2 people job. Medium risk.

Or 3 people job, you start a fight across the street with your buddy and he will come over to break it up. Keep it going for couple minutes while the third guy takes the T.

Or 2-3 person job. You need a girl. Run in front of the guard with the girl chasing you. Have the girl yell "stop thief! He took my purse." Make sure to keep running while the girl or someone else is taking the T. After a while drop the purse, the guard will stop to take the purse to return it to the girl. Make sure the girl and the T are gone.

To lower the risk, get a prepaid phone with cash and call campus police and report a live break in on the other side of the campus. That will keep the cops busy and lower the chance of running into them.

Society should be grateful that Tech-educated folks generally do not plan crimes. Law enforcement stands no chance.
