Whoops wrong section meant to post in basketball section. Sorry

Earlier this year Paul Hewitt started to get very defensive and started making excuses and blaming expectations being the reason he is on the hot seat. Two comments I remember specifically. One he stated "besides NC and Duke what other ACC teams have made it to the NCAA 3 out of 4 years?" He also stated something about how he was not Georgia Tech's first pick for Head basketball coach and that he was way down the list. He was saying this to implicate that Tech can not pick who ever they want at Tech and he is a great coach at Tech. Well I wanted to look at how he compares to Cremins to give us some baseline to what he should be accomplishing. He should be able to at least be even with the former coach at Tech IMO. One thing to keep in mind is that when Bobby took over Tech basketball was terrible, and when Hewitt took over it was not terriable but weak. In other words Hewitt has a advantage to Cremins due to what was already established.

Right now Hewitt has little to say for himself. I donot want to hear the excuses. He is riding the one team he took to the finals and without that teams Bobby wins 13-0. I have liked Hewitt all the way through but now he is starting to become complacent with being a average ACC team. Not good enough for ME! What do you guys think? The biggest stat that stick out to me is final 32 appearences. Paul Hewitt has finished in the top 32 only 25% of the time. Georgia Tech is a top 25 basketball program and only 2 out 8 is not acceptable to me.
To Hell with Georgia

I am starting to feel like you but I still think he has been very unfortunate with players leaving. However, he certainly has not said the right things. Next year will be put up or shut up time.

I think it's interesting that....

when Bobby had all the defections to the NBA, "the game had passed him by" and "his system won't work anymore," etc, etc. Hewitt has the same defections and he is "unfortunate."

I think Hewitt is a good man and I REALLY want him to do well -- but our basketball team has become irrelevant both on the national stage and in the ACC.

If he doesn't have a very good year next year, he will both be unfortunate and the majority of the fanbase(me included) will think that we are probably in need of a change. I have long been and still am a supporter of Coach Hewitt, but even I am getting sick of the lack of boxing out and the mental lapses that we show.

I just don't understand though...boxing out(like we should have done on that putback dunk in today's game) is something that you learn at the earliest stage of basketball...I know how to do it, high schoolers know how to do it, people in 40 year old+ rec leagues know how to do it...how is it that our players don't? It's not something Paul or his assistants should have to teach them, even though the responsibility ultimately does fall on him.

I hate these comparisons as it inevitably will lead to someone trying to tear down Bobby to defend Hewitt.

Do the NIT bids count the year we turned down an NIT bid in protest because Bobby (and most everyone other than the selection committee) felt we deserved an NCAA bid?

I know it may have been TIC, but I don't think Bobby would want any part of a return . Too much to lose and too little to win for him.

On a tangent, has anyone else seen the special on Bobby's career (I think it was "Under the Lights" or something like that.) His current players love him. One said, "Coach is a comedian. He doesn't always mean to funny, but he is a comedian." or WTTE

Bobby's didn't talk like a master tactician, but he really had a better grasp and feel for the game than many gave him credit for having. Watching him work with the Charleston team on the sidelines made me realize how much he understood about adjustments and countering.

I think we can all agree that next year's team MUST BE AN NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAM! I too have long supported Hewitt and hope like heck that 2003-2004 wasn't just lightning in a bottle.

Your right about one thing next year is do or die for Hewitt. I don't think Rad will take it much longer. I think I would be willing to give Hewitt more of the benifit of the doubt about players leaving (even though that is his responsibility recruiting players to replace them) if he would not be content with how things have been lately, and not admitting he has been struggling. No I didn't add in the Nit appearences we turned down. I don't remember that for some reason. How many did we turn down? Sorry if you dislike the comparision, but seems Bobby crushed Hewiitt and it would be pretty hard to justify crushing Bobby after looking at Hewitt

I agree about the boxing out. That is elementary stuff. We were out maned inside today

The performances disgust me. We have 5 players out there running 5 different plays. We look like stray farm animals out there.

Even if I wanted Hewitt out (which I don't yet, I say we give him at least another year before pushing the panic button), The AA's current financial situation probably precludes us from making any changes we want.

i have about as much chance at being 6'8" in the morning. We will be VERY lucky if we get a NIT berth next year. About the only way that will happen is if we schedule 14 of the UNC-Greensboro and Winthrops of the world. :eek5:

It was only one year and I forget which year. My guess is that the NIT would have been such a letdown that Bobby knew our team would not perform well. We weren't even considered a bubble team at the time, so the snub was hard to explain.

Tech declined an invitation to the NIT in 1995 with an overall record of 18-12 --8-8 in the ACC (5th place).
