They need to get rid of the helmet to helmet rule and go back to the spearing call. When you clearly lead with the helmet call spearing. But, helmet to helmet contact happens all the time. It gets called or not called at such critical moments. When we hit someone it gets called. They clearly ignored the hit on the Texas Tech QB.

It doesn't automatically mean Helmet to Helmet just cause they meet. I believe you have to be leading with your Helmet in order to be flagged. I could be wrong.

In the TT game I think it was more of just a hit that happened but didn't look to be intentionally a basic spear with the head

Whatever the rule is, it is so subjective that it is stupid. And the new rule protecting receivers will be similar.

There is a difference between pounding someone you know can't receive the ball and making a good play on a receiver that might or might not cause an incompletion.

I've only seen a couple of those plays where the new rule came into play, but I hate seeing defenders penalized for clean, good plays.

P.S.
These rules ought to be subject to review and reconsideration just like fumbles. Morgan Burnett got called for a late hit out of bound when he did nothing but fall down himself after pushing out a receiver.

They definitely have to revisit the "helmet to helmet" rule. I agree that it should be revised to spearing. They should try to define "intentional spearing" as well. Because it is pure judgement. Nothing objective to it.

The return play in which our player got blown up by the Miami player, there was helmet to helmet contact. The Miami player was leading with his head and yet there was no flag thrown.

I'm scared of rules committees revisiting anything. They'll just turn down the football and turn up the protection like always. Soon we'll be debating what color our QB's flags ought to be...

It's already getting this way in the NFL, if they call it like the rules dictate; can't hit them low, can't hit them high, can't drive them to the ground after you've gotten ahold of them, and can't hit them if you're on the ground. One thing I will say is the NFL refs seem to do pretty good on not calling phantom late hits.

Hmmmm, maybe we should just return the uniform and pad standards to the 1930's and we wouldn't need to worry as much about players using bodies as weapons. You don't see people propelling themselves so fearlessly in rugby.
