They never turn to play the ball. Massaquoi just jumped up and caught this over Roberson for a big gainer last year.

Its all poor coaching. Tenuta did a poor job coaching our DBs, period. Hopefully they'll get some better coaching with a different DB coach in place.

Snapshots don't show the whole picture. How far out of position was the corner (and safety for that matter)? If he was just catching up during the snapshot, then the bigger issue is why our corners are out of position so often (beaten by a mile).

We ran a zone blitz almost exclusively. A QB with an OL who could pick up a bltz, and who could pick that zone apart could have a field day against us. Hence, DBs catching up to the play as the QB repeatedly throws into the seam. Happened over and over. It became more and more common the last 2 years. We will run more man and bump this fall.

I read an article a while back that said that Tenuta's technique kept the DB's in a back pedal longer whereas our new technique will be to turn and run quicker...this makes a lot of sense after remembering how many times we got burnt deep.

Outside the progression of the offense, I'm looking forward to seeing the progression of the secondary during the year Coach Kelly made our special teams into one of the top in the country last year. Hopefully he can do the same with our DBs this year. Giff Smith seems to think he will.

That's crap. What was our pass efficiency defense rating in 2006? Number 9 in the country. Now explain what a poor job Tenuta did coaching DBs.

It's about Jimmys and Joes, not X's and O's. The talent level at DB was poor last year. We lost Kenny Scott from 2006. That was a HUGE loss than no one talks about. We did not have that shut down corner last year on the field side.

Tenuta played a cushion to keep from getting beaten deep. If those guys had played tight, WRs would have been running past them.

Tenuta did a great job of covering up a huge talent weakness on the 2007 team, but scheme only gets you so far.

Not buying it. We played off for the same reason we've always played off...we were blitzing every down and playing zone behind it. I'm not saying we had the best talent in the league or anything, but Tenuta played the same defense he's been playing for 6 years. The next time a LB defends against a pass will be pretty close to the first time. Plus I know it's accepted fact around here that Scott was fantastic, but if he was why doesn't anyone given him a shot in the league?

I actually think our DBs will do fine this year with some different schemes and coverages and just a little help from the LBs on coverage.

I agree. When Morgan Burnette was put at corner, I noticed an improvement.

I know you didn't come up with it, but I really hate that stupid little saying.

Our LB's defended a lot of passes over the years. K Mike had Smardjia almost that whole game for example.

Our LBs also got beat lots of times over the years. We always blitzed at least one, so the other 2 and a safety had to cover for the missingi LB. We were more focused on getting to the QB then covering the TE or any short patterns.

That frustrated me for a long time, ncjacket. However thinking back to when a coach somewhere along the line told us wtte: the difference between offense and defense is that it takes all 11 guys on offense working together to make the play happen, but it only takes one defensive player making a great play to blow it up.

There are three ways to stop an offense: playing good run defense, playing good pass defense (or both), and getting to the ball quickly enough to blow up the play. You have to be able to stop the run, or your defense will stink. If you can do all three, you are a superior defense. If you can't play pass D, you'd better be able to get to the ball quickly. So CJT's approach is a sensible one.

There are those that criticize CJT for his style, and I'm included in that list somewhat. Perhaps he was covering for the deficiency in pass D. However, I never saw us try to play straight up D the whole time he was here, so how do we know? I do know that we sent 4-5 DBs into the league in his tenure, so we must not have had too bad a talent pool. I just would like to have seen some straight up secondary play from time to time.

I agree stinger. I don't think we have any idea what our DBs or LBs were capable of in pure pass defense because they never played it. Granted, that might be why we were playing the defense we were, but since we never varied during Tenuta's tenure, my guess is that's simply the style he likes to play. While I loved the pressure we got sometimes, I don't think it's fair to denigrate our DBs when they never really had much of a chance to show what they can do.
