Here\'s a thought!

Instead of going to Perry's Ocean Edge in Daytona Beach every year, why don't we skip the next few vacations, save our money and then head off to the French Riviera or at least St. Barts every third year or so? I think on that, my family would finally agree with me on something!

Along those same lines, I happen to be convinced that Paul Hewitt is well respected around these confines for being a proven rain maker, and that this Tech fan base is patient with him because another "wonderful trip" is in store very soon. Definitely not this year, and maybe not next year, but we are already looking forward to his next exciting run, because we have faith that it will be well worth it.
I admit that I don't pull hair out over basketball, but I still have great lingering memories of our "trip" two years ago.

I want our football program to mirror our basketball program. I use to think Daytona Beach was exciting and fun, but I hate it now. I mean really hate it.
We have proven that we can go to 9 straight bowl games. That is truly fantastic! However, it was pointed out by a friend that Ga. Tech is the only team going to 9 straight "bowl" games that has not gone to a BCS game in that stretch. I think that fact puts this string in perspective.

Hey Dad, I don't want to say I have not appreciated the last 9 years, but do you think we skip Daytona this year, save some money and then go on a nice trip next year? I know we will have to work extra hard, but the whole family will enjoy it more.

Re: That is the absence of thought!

Comparing basketball and football generally, and the basketball situtation at GT with the football situation at GT specifically is like comparing, well, Daytona Beach with the French Riveria.

Re: That is the absence of thought!

What? You really missed a simple point. It had nothing to do with comparing basketball to football. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pat.gif

Re: That is the absence of thought!

pw, there's too many engineering types around here for a post like that. Make it simple man. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

May I attempt an interpretation?

1. You want a new Dad?
2. You want the AA to save the $$$ it would spend going out west so it can buy its way into a better bowl?
3. You want Paul Hewitt to be your dad?
4. Our bowl streak is diminished in your mind because none of the 9 have been BCS games, and it doesn't matter that the 110 Division I schools who have had the opportunity to attend these non-BCS bowls have failed to do so 9 years in a row?
5. You'd rather have no vacation than a week at Daytona? How many years would it take of no vacation to make you appreciate what you have?

Am I close?

Re: That is the absence of thought!

Your post number 1: “I want our football program to mirror our basketball program.”

Your post number 2, in response to my post: “You really missed a simple point. It had nothing to do with comparing basketball to football.”

I agree that one of us missed a simple point.

Re: That is the absence of thought!

I think you are being a bit too literal for me. Let's just forget it.

Re: That is the absence of thought!

Like I said man, remember the engineering mind. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif

Re: That is the absence of thought!

You must be right, although I still don't understand why the connection was so difficult to make.
Maybe Daytona Beach is far too luxurious a destination to use in my analogy.

Re: That is the absence of thought!

If my son is any example, engineers simply don't do analogies.

Re: That is the absence of thought!

Next time, try using Dubai or Tahiti as the premium destination locale.

Or just say that you'd like to see some hope in the football program so that fans can believe that we're a BCS caliber team who can contend for the big trophy every now and then rather than go to lower-tier bowls as a result of having slightly better than mediocre seasons year in and year out.

Analogies don't work when your core audience favors the left side of the brain. :)

Re: That is the absence of thought!

Thank you Thunder!
I guess I wasn't aware that we nongeneers had such a gift!
My day just improved in a way comparable to the mindset of the early Byzantine empire as it relates to today's......
Aw, forget it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

Try contruction analogies.

Re: That is the absence of thought!

Your post didn't get lost on me P_W. Of course I'm a non-engineering UGA grad, so my mind is perfect for comprehending such analogies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

PW, I get the analogy and also that this has nothing to do with basketball. But where the analogy breaks down for me, at least in my interpretation of the analogy (and I could be wrong), is that I don't see a correlation between NOT going back to a minor bowl and the next year (or the year after that, I'm not quibbling about how long it takes) going to a really good bowl.

Oh wait, I think I MIGHT get it now. Tell me if I'm wrong or right here. What I think you're talking about is making a major, major change in the program that might cost us a year or two of suffering because of the change but in the end would pay big dividends?

If I got it right then I guess I get your point ;)

JOJATK,

Yes, you understand what I was trying to analogize. It wasn't suppose to be a riddle.
You have actually gone a bit further than what I was originally thinking.

To explain, Dad in this analogy is the Dave Braine and apparent CG mindset. Daytona Beach is obviously the combination of barely .500 seasons, and the subsequent trips to minor bowl games.

The plot is this: Many years ago, the Tech family would go on lavish trips to all the top destinations. The patriarch of the family during this golden time went by Bobby.
As time marched on, Bobby faded away and so did the abundant riches of the Tech family. For many years, all the Techs could do was gather around and listen to the grand memories told by the elders of the Tech clan.

And then, in the year of 19 and 87, another Techman by the name of Bobby rose to power within the family. This younger Bobby returned all of the glory to this proud family, but for only a very brief time. You see, this Bobby was a wanderlust at heart and moved on even while the celebration bells still rang.

This departure of the second coming of Bobby saw the Tech family fortunes once again plummet during the next age, when a man actually originating from the barbarian pack to the north and east somehow rose to the position of supreme power in the proud and noble Tech family. By the time this imposter that many claim to be the devil was exposed, the destruction had been done.

Since those dark ages, the family has righted itself. Much of that credit goes to the brash red headed step child named George, who was actually discovered by Bobby the Second.
George was loved by many for starting to bring back the family tradition of prosperity and exciting yearly trips to destinations where the entire family could gather.
As all good things must come to an end, George left the Techs to join and lead a prominant Catholic family. Unfortunately for George, he was excommunicated in less than a week. They say it was over some serious fibbing. Many of the Tech family are not surprised. They say George still has part of the family treasure.

That brings us to the current day. The new patriarch has studied his history well. He certainly understands that the family loves to make it's yearly pilgramages, but I don't think he understands that we are a spoiled family.
Many of us don't have the heart to tell him that if we can't go first class, we would rather wait until next year.

We should just let some of the nouveaux riche, white trash
families have the Daytona Beach's of the world all to themselves for a while.

I meant something like that! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif
