Maybe we can actually beat U(sic)GA THIS YEAR.

Before the flames begin, let me explain.

There's been lot of talk about it already on this board. That's great - the excitement and enthusiasm are infectious. How many of you, though, objectively thought we were a better team THIS YEAR?

I'll have to admit I didn't realistically think we could beat them this year.

Make no mistake - I'm an insane GT fan. I am super stoked at how we're playing and there is no doubt that we're going to be scary good sooner than later.

I'm trying to look at this objectively. If you do that, you have to believe that, as it stands today, they would be favored against us. They are stacked with talent and they can be explosive. Moreno is a great running back. Green is a phenom. I don't think Stafford is as great as everyone says, but he's not chopped liver either.

Let's face it, even after last night, they're still a pretty good team.

BUT...

I had a thought last night that started as a little seed, and by halftime had gone into full bloom: These guys are beatable, and we could beat them. THIS YEAR!

So I'm interested in what y'all think.

How much of last night's total smackdown was because U(sic)GA is not as good as everyone thinks? How much was because Alabama is better than everyone believed? How much were U(sic)GA's weaknesses exposed?

If you agree with me, tell me why, objectively, you think we can beat them.

If you don't that's cool too. Tell me why.

If we can cover those receivers, we can beat them. If we do get a lead like Bama, we will have an easier time than Bama protecting our lead and killing the game.

QFT with an addition in bold print.

nice addition, I thought about that right after I posted but I was too lazy to edit.

The biggest difference in the game was Bama's ability to get to the QB without blitzing all their LBs. They were getting most of the pressure with their front four. Our DL is every bit as good, so let's hope that the UGA OL doesn't make huge strides this year. The way it looks now, Michael Johnson will have a field day with their left end.

We can beat them. We have been very close to beating them for several years now. It's not like we have been beaten decisively in the most recent games.

We have lost because of a lack of confidence that led to the inability to make the winning plays in the fourth quarter. I believe this team may be coached to a greater level of confidence and may perform better in the fourth quarter of tight games than previoous teams.

Also, we have lost close games to them with a pretty vanilla offense that created no special challenges for the Georgia defense. This year will be different. If we are healthy and have progressed in our running of the option offense, there will be a very big challenge facing the Dawg D.

It will be tough. But, after the last few years and what I've seen so far this year, I see no reason not to expect a great game that we can win.

Since you asked.

I know that we CAN win. We could've won the last 6.

However despite last night's game I think this is an exceptional georgie team. Better than the last 6 with only one weakness (the O line). And they have playmakers at ALL of the skill positions more than capable of hiding the deficient line play.

I feel great going forward but do not feel good about this year. It'll take a great game to win.

I know we can. I know it will be tough. I know if we don't, they tie the longest streak record and we'll graduate yet another class without a Georgia loss. I know CPJ knows how imperative it is that we win.

The game last night showed the key to beating them is to shut down Moreno. Plain and simple

"Imperative"? What exactly do you mean by that? Does that mean Coach Johnson should be fired if we don't beat UGA this year? You know, we are so incredibly lucky to have hired this man to coach our football team. He turned down more money to come and be our coach. He'll probably get bigger offers to go elsewhere within the next year or so. But you think it's "imperative" that he beats UGA this year?

I think that he's already made a lot of progress and that if we continue to get better and play with the level of effort and intensity we have so far, we will have had a geat year, even if we can't quite manage to go to Athens and upset one of the best teams in the country.

Wow, don't get all worked up over an assumption. I was saying he knows how important it is to fans to beat a rival. He knew it at Navy and he knows it at Tech. I'm sure he knows about the streak and how much it would suck it it were tied.

Oh, who am I kidding. Yea, I think he should be fired in his first year as a coach when he's already exceeded most people's expectations. lol...

That's fine and I'm sorry if I overreacted, but in fairness the word "imperative" has a different meaning than the word "important."

I think we could beat them if:
They give us turnovers a few times
We don't turn it over
We control the ball and the clock
Play great defense
No key players are hurt for us and some are for them
Need a big start (two td's +) to neutralize No 24 rushing
THis could happen.

Indeed. But I think CPJ is smart enough to realize that if at all possible, it is imperative that we don't give up the streak (whether that means to a tie or giving it up completely).

If I remember correctly, last year we dropped what would have been a TD early in the game, UGA muffed a punt back into the endzone but because of the bogus rules in place got rewarded for muffing by having the ball spotted at the 20 instead of it being a safety, and Burnett had an interception return which he fumbled away at the goal line..giving the mutts a touchback and a new set of downs.

This was LAST YEAR. We were abysmal last year, especially down the stretch. UGA was the hottest team in the country down the stretch, yet if a few plays go our way that didn't, we likely get the W. I don't believe that there's a laundry list of things we would have to do to beat this team, just play a solid game and it should be close. I would like to think we are better than South Carolina (who just beat Wofford by 10 pts), and they didn't do anything special to hang with them.
