Here's Some Instant Oatmeal for You

I wouldn't throw dirt on Notre Dame's season just yet. They have a lot of good athletes on that team and a couple of really good ones.

They do have a lot of good athletes, but this won't be their year to shine. Expect them to return to the spotlight next year with a rebuilt team - not that they're ever OUT of the spotlight.

lol great title thread, mm. i agree that ND's season looks bleak on paper, but i'm not going to just give up before the season even starts. that's the thing.... nobody expected ND to do good in 2005. i don't think we will have another 2005esque season, but it certainly won't be as bad as some predict. there will be games that ND wins that, on paper, they should never win. i still think that they will end out 7-5.

I agree, io. 6-6 is expected and 7-5 is not a reach. I believe ND will be getting a more even break in road games with the switch to BE refs.

I agree it would be foolish to count ND out. They are young and somewhat inexperienced, but that doesn't have to translate to 2nd-rate performance. ND has a great coaching staff and that plus talent is all it takes to succeed.

The ND "Baby Bombers" of 1966 were young and turned out to be one of the best teams ever.

I definitely do not count out the Irish. Game 1, at South Bend, it is unlikely that either offense will be sharp. In a defensive, close struggle in the shadow of the Golden Dome and Touchdown Jesus, on NBC - lots of intangibles go the way of the Irish. I don't remember too many pleasant days for us in South Bend. I am confident we have a good chance to win, but not at all cocky about this opener.

The real question is this: if we win 9 games including vs ND, and ND wins 7, do they get a better bowl than us?

I believe that is the SOP, according to past observations.

In that scenario the best bowl available to Notre Dame would be the Gator or Sun. Last year we won 9 and went to the Gator. Looks like it would be a close call.

bowls are about money... and ND draws the biggest crowd. i'd say ND would get the Gator Bowl over GT even if they had 7 wins b/c, at the end of the day, the bowl coords only care about the money. is it fair to others? of course not. ND's bowl loss streak can be attributed to them being placed in bowls that they dont deserve. but, in the large scope of things... i think any fan would love for their team to get extra (albeit undeserved) attention.

GT had more fans at the 98 GB than did ND.

i dont think anyone is going to argue that ND will generate more money than any other team in a national setting.

I'll agree with that.

GT had more fans at the 98 GB than did ND.

I'll also agree with that, but qualify it by saying that in 98 our program was on an upswing, so the Gator meant a lot more to us than it did last year. Plus, it's a good local distance for Tech. ND would rape us on attendance for a west coast bowl.

i'd say ND would get the Gator Bowl over GT even if they had 7 wins ...

We would not actually be in competition for a bowl spot. ND is part of the Big East/Big 12 package that supplies one spot in the Gator and the ACC supplies the other spot.

If we create a hypothetical competition for a bowl spot, then ND would almost certainly be preferred by any bowl committee.
