I checked the latest depth chart for the Army game, 7 games into the season, and James Johnson and Greg Smith are the starting Wideouts.

It was reported all summer that Johnson was not holding onto the ball in camps. In 6 games that he has played, he has a total of 8 catches. He is 5th on the team in receptions behind the TE, the RB, his back up who happens to lead the team, and Smith

I think there are better players on the bench that are not getting a shot because Gailey favors experience over talent. This has been a consistent problem in my eyes with Chan as a head coach. You start your best players PERIOD. You use minutes in the game to see what kind of talent you have in Earls and Donley.

Its exactly why we have a walk-on returning punts, because Gailey is too concerned over injuring a playmaker. Problem is, he doesn't play his playmakers.

Agreed BOR, agreed. It seems like this problem has only affected the offense, though. He has done this on the OL and he did this last year with Reggie. Even demjackets said JJ has sucked in practices as lately as this week.

BOR, do you drive from Savannah for every game?

Yeah, demjackets said something about he may be on the sidelines fairly soon. If we get way up on Army early I hope we get a chance to work on our passing game instead of just running the clock out.

I don't think JJ is the problem , he's a decent reciever, made a lot of big catches last year, and made some against Notre Dame as well, but I haven't seen a lot of him since, but I don't see him dropping passes like he did late last yr, but I do see Bebe and Smith drop, but then again, JJ isn't thrown to as much. Maybe he has problems getting open, not sure.

But I am really, really liking what I see from Donley and Earls. Especially Earls, I think he has that burst that I've been waiting for this offense to have, he just gives me that feeling that he can take anything to the house if he gets loose, I haven't been able to say that in a while, Calvin could but he was long and lanky so it didn't look as explosive as it actually was, but Earls looks like he is great in space and can really turn it on quick. Have to wait and see though.

JJ has been playing hurt and when he gets healthy he will be more of a factor.

The drops lately have been on HIGH throws. They may have been catchable but it would take GREAT catches. Would like to see those throws come down a 1 1/2 feet.

BOR,

Are you sure you're not confusing starting lineups and depth charts with number of plays played, with the latter being far more important than the former? It seems to me that JJ's number of plays has decreased, even if the starting lineup hasn't changed.

That said, I agree that Gailey favors experience over talent, all other things being equal, but this is not exactly a new concept. This concept limits mistakes, and is in-line with his overall coaching philosophy. Don't expect that to change anytime soon.

The same can be said of STs, although I'm not so sure that it is Chan calling the shots as to who fields punts -- are you privy to who makes that call? How do you know that they would rather have sure hands back there so as to not make a big mistake, rather than base the decision on "injuring a playmaker"?

That said, how do you know that the skill levels are what you think they are? Do you watch practices, do you know the injury status of these players? Do you have the level of information on these players the coaches do? Just like the second string quaterback is the favorite player on a struggling team, the second teamers at other positions are susceptible to the same error in logic.

There are reasons these players are second string, as much as it peeves you to believe Chan and our coaching staff might just know what they are doing, you must admit that they have both better information than you as well as more experience than you....but I know, that doesn't make for impactful, pot-stirring posts, and I shouldn't take you too seriously. So thank you for the opportunity to respond...Mike

BOR does make a good point. I wouldn't start JJ, he has been hurt and since the UGA game alligator arms anything over the middle. Thomas and Smith should be that starters with Donley and Earls seeing time till JJ shows hes ready to contribute again.

I don't have a problem with Tyler Evans on punt return though not this year, he will be challenged next year though.

BOR

We have only had 4 healthy receivers the past few games...and they have all played about the same amount. JJ, Bebe, Smith, and Donley.

We need 5 healthy receivers for our offense...Geis has said time and again 5 are in his rotation...and Earls is back to full strength for Army.

The main difference you are seeing is Bebe is getting the primary receiver slot on more of the pass plays...hence his 9 catches two weeks ago.

Donley just had to learn his routes and reads better...and become a better blocker.

Too many posters underestimate the difficulty of WR's and TB's being able to read the defense and make the right move.

truth be told...if we just threw 35 times to Cox and Peek and save 5 throws for TC and Grant and TC has an average game there would be enough yardage on the board to be 6-1. Time of possession would also be well in our favor aiding our syrupy secondary out.

Cox and Peek
This is the absolute biggest problem I have had with our offense since CG arrived. By taking the FB & TE out of the playbook, he has really simplified the game plan against our offense. A quick hitter up the middle to Cox, or Peek on a slant or TE screen would keep the LBs and safeties honest and open up the deep passes, end runs, and screens. That alone would help free up the WR's for easier catches.

Clapper.. your spot on. This plays right to TB's strenghts, and the team's strengths. It will also open up some holes for TC. And if TB wants to run outside being lead by Peek for a few more TD's now and then just to surprise us all then so be it.

I get that the kind of routes matter, but you do realize Peek is our 3rd leading receiver and TC is 4th right? Cox has caught 7 balls, which I would like to see increase, but our biggest issue overall IMO is that our overall passing game sucks.

there is a lot of truth to that.

...but you also have to mix it up. I can remember Friedgen saying he called plays that he did not expect or care if yardage was gained...they were just to set up plays he would call later on.

I would love to see a hand off to the FB out of the I formation. Maybe on 1st down around midfield. I think it would get 5-6 yards the first time we pulled it.

Have you even remotely watched any of our games this year? We throw to TEs and RBs as much as we do WRs.

What??? Nix is the one that did not throw to the TE and rarely to the FB. They complain about it at Miami already.

Bond is using Peek more than any OC I can remember in all my years following GT football....and that is with only one healthy TE that can catch and is ready to play! Imagine if he had three of them.!

1- BeBe- 23 catches
2- GSmith- 21 catches
3- Peek- 17 catches
4- Choice- 11 catches
5- JJohnson- 8 catches
6- Cox- 7 catches

Beej67..read the post. the point was to throw much much more to he TE's use the wr's to spred the defense and open up opprtunities for the RB's and TE's.

We throw to the TE plenty, dude. There's lots of things you can complain about with this year's offense, but not targeting the TE isn't one of them. You're barking waaaay up the wrong tree.

As head coach, he can make any decision he wants to, and not putting someone in there that has the ability to break open a play is getting stupid. 4 years ago when we were hurting on depth, I understand that. But we aren't anymore.

Wait a minute, did you just convince yourself out of agreeing with me? I read enough practice reports and watch enough games to have an inkling of an idea that so and so might not be the best choice on the field, and the only way you are going to find out if you have someone better is by actually playing them in a game. I'll say it until I am blue in the face, Matt Rhodes didn't give us the best chance at LG, of course Dunman may not either based on his penalty performance versus Maryland. But then again, Rhodes helped solidify my opinion of his ability versus Miami when he got abused by the opposing player and for like the 5th time in his career retaliaited to get a 15 yard Unsportsmanlike penalty.

It is not difficult to see that Chan has a serious issue with not playing the best players at certain positions. There are examples throughout his career. While Reggie Ball may have been the better option than Taylor, at some point you have to bench him for his crap play and Chan never did.
