Did you notice how after we beat Miami and gave UGA heck all of a sudden the recruits we have stink less and now we are up to #40 on the Rivals list?

Does it prove that rankings reflect the perception of the program more than the perception of the players? No. Does it add some fuel to the fire? Yes. Of course I don't get why they think so poorly of VT's recruits year in/year out. That seems to be one exception.

Can you bump this one back to the top after the bowl game and let us know how we rank? If we can handle our opponent like we've done in the last two years, I'd be interested to see how they rank our recruits then!

I don't think the individual player rankings have changed (in Rivals, they have in Scout) - adding 3*** Laurence Marius is probably the reason for the upgrade in overall rankings.

We had some one star guys.

[/ QUOTE ]I've been watching it pretty closely, too. If we get a commitment from a guy that's not in their database, they'll add him as a 1* - they always bump them (at least) to a 2** within a couple of days. I've never seen a win or a loss impact any individual recruits rankings.

There have been times when an individual's star ranking changed after committing to us - some positive and some negative. Calvin was a 5***** on scout and dropped a star when he committed to GT. I think it was added back later.

My take...

Don't know why you are asking me this specifically, but I did notice that our recruiting rankings were improving. I think that has more to do with the fact that this is the time the services are typically updating their rankings as opposed to us winning a game.

That said, I've never been to into recruiting rankings. We could provide a bus station full of our best players over the last 10 years that were some of our finest players. I've always said that the rankings outside of the top 10-20 at their respective positions, have a lot of parity. There is not much difference between the number 30 OLine prospect and the #100 in my opinion. Both under proper coaching can be great. With RB's, I think after the top 10, 11 through 60 are pretty much the same.

People get worked up over rankings. There's just way too much parity in college football to take the rankings seriously.

IIRC...

you have made interesting 'observations' like this in the past and seem to keep abreast of recruiting.

As you probably know, ~ weekly from August to February some wahoo will come on here with rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth based on the Rivals rank. I need a few astute posters like you to be up to speed if I need to reference this in the rebuttal.

Re: IIRC...

Won't do any good I'm afraid. I've learned that a lot of the readers are not interested in facts one bit, but only their opinions. Like one poster told me a couple of years back, "listing facts here is much like nailing jello to the wall." I think he was on track too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif

Re: My take...

You got it pegged BOR.

The problem people have is this forced ranking of players. They actually believe the #28 Safety is better than the #29 guy. The rankings are a gimick to make the services more interesting and generate cash. Sure some guys are better than others. But no one can evaluate that many players accurately, especially when they don't play each other.

Just our of curiosity, how many of you have coached a sport where you had to pick a team from tryouts or made cuts? How hard is it to judge players in a short time period even when they're all on the field at the same time? So how would "recruiting experts" be able to judge players from across the country? It doesn't even make sense.

Re: My take...

And yet thousands and thousands continue to buy the magazines and premium websites. These guys are laughing all the way to the bank.

Talk about a coach killer! If UT doesn't get their stuff back together soon, imagine the frustration and anguish of being run out because the sales manager at Rivals knows he can sell more subscriptions in and around Knoxville by adding stars to their recruits.

I would much rather be in CG's shoes. Nearly a can't lose deal.

Re: My take...

I will say that these services do seem to be expanding into sports reporting as much as recruiting. I think they know that recruiting alone won't make them a fortune.
