club newsletter dated 02/15/1983. The letter from Larry Travis opens, "Georgia Tech has just completed one of its successful recruiting years in its history! Our top priority this year was size and speed, and we helped ourselves tremendously on both counts. I have enclosed a list ...
4. John Davis, Offensive-Defensive Tackle, 6-4,270, Ellijay, GA (Gilmer)
One of the state's most highly sought linemen in '82, he was named the Class AA Lineman of the Year by the ajc. Was all-conference and all-state as a senior and will play in the Georgia High School all-star game. Was a member of ajc top 15 players in state. Also, lettered 3 years in basketball and track , he holds 3 school basketball records, including most points in a career. Coached in high school by Tim Marchman."

I wonder what happened to that guy. Did he pursue basketball? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I didn't realize they played basketball in Ellijay. It's a shame he wasn't a few years older, I'd have loved to see a matchup against Dale Ellis.

What are the other two records? At 270, I'd guess bent rims and shattered backboards.

The early 80's were great HS BB days. Wills, Wheeler, SW Macon, Beach, Campbell of Smyrna, Marietta, Douglass - great teams those days.

Wow Augusta, that brings back memories. I don't know what the other two records were except i used to get a lot of technicals. I might have held the record for the most points in the paint. lol. The weight was a bit low as well. All those recruiting trips added one or two pounds.

I don't think people remember but C. Cremins invited me to play BBall but C. Curry squashed it.

Anyone have an audio clip of Al Ciraldo saying "... BIIIIIG John Davis ..."?

I never got tired of hearing that.
