Disclaimer: This is not a anti-Chan, pro-Chan post. This is simply something I am noticing as a trend in college football.

I live in the Florida panhandle...so I hear mostly talk about Florida, FSU, LSU, Alabama, and Auburn.

I walk into a room to a sizable group of guys that I am frequently around...even though they are Gator fans...to here them talking about who they could get as their head coach and if they could get Spurrier from South Carolina. They were slamming Urban Meyer....the same Urban Meyer the Gator Nation was praising only one year ago!!

Within this group....and on talk radio...I have heard them say:
1) Meyer won last year with Zook's players
2) Meyer has been lucky to win as much as he had
3) Meyer does not know how to use Tebow
4) Meyer's offense is gimmicky
5) Meyer does not spend any time focusing on defense
6) Meyer is not a "Florida boy"

I reminded them quickly...and the hosts on the call-in shows remind them quickly...that THEY ran of Ron Zook who is now building something at Illinois. I also reminded them last year of the dynasty talk after they landed Meyer.

Oh...and in case anyone is wondering. One of the top calls on the drive home radio show this week...."Nick Saban is overrated and will not get it done at Alabama". Good grief...he is not even one year into it!

I have come to the conclusion that no coach is sacred with the fanbase..and never will be. Weis was the next Rockne just over one year ago....now they want his head. Is any fanbase happy with their coach? Only considering the BCS schools....I wonder if only 5 or so are happy right now?

btw...apparently there are thousands of available head football coaches in the panhandle of Florida!! :laugher:

That's the mark of a real college football program. Always striving to improve. Not settling for mediocrity like some people.

If you are saying that UF is a mediocre program...wow...that's some definition.

These people are idiots. Winning is what breeds this mentality. When you when it big, and stay at the top for a few years, you feel like you deserve to always be there, and anything less means your coach sucks. Would gladly trade our current and past fews seasons for theirs...

My Dad is a UF graduate. He used to joke that a Florida fan's perfect season would be to go undefeated, be ranked #1, beat Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl and fire the head coach before returning home.

This is one of the reasons why head coaches get the big bucks.

(That Notre Dame part does need to be updated.)

Hiveredtech, it sounds like you walked in on the Fall Golf Outing for the Stingtalk Forum members. Was the Outing divided between the Chan Haters and Chan Keepers?

It is nice down here. Most everyone respects GT...no one hates us. It is actually nice not having to run into Bulldawgs anymore except the Saturday after Thanksgiving....that is more than enough for me.
One guy even responded to me that Florida would be better off with Chan rather than Meyer because "Chan is a Florida man".
They spend all their time complaining about their own program amongst themselves...and then bragging unmercilessly to their opposing fans.
Down here...the LSU and Alabama fans are by far the hardest to take.

Bama fans are typically older, tooth-challenged individuals that have always followed Bama and still wear the original :"A" hat they bought in 1978. Everyone else is an LSU fan! I'll take that anyday over the redneck UGAG bunch. :laugher:

I'm here in Gulf Shores, AL just west of the Florida panhandle on the same coast, and I get the same take from folks on Tech. I have 2 other Tech alums I know and one family (die hard Alabama fans) whose son is a senior at Tech (CompE). Everyone else has a neutral respect for Tech, or is ignorant to its very existence. I'll be heading out of town for a game with my Tech flags and Buzz magnets on my truck, stop at a gas station and get, "what's with the bee?" I answer, "you're kidding, right?" and I feel obligated to give a history of college football, of the head coach who the Heisman trophy was named after, of the oldest 1-A stadium, of the first team in the south to go to and win the 4 major bowls, of the first team in the south to go to and win the Rose, and so and so forth. It's become my burden here.

Heh, I've known a much older Bama fan for awhile. While he liked how we beat Auburn the last couple of times, there was always an undercurrent of resentment against Tech. It appears that everyone in Alabama, Auburn and Bama fans, used to hate Tech because of how we dominated them in the 1950s. Tech was also hated by Tennessee and of course hated by Georgia with Dodd's 8(?) game winning streak against them. We were pretty much the ND of the SEC in the 1950s and people hated us for it.

I miss the 1950s.

Yeah, if you've heard the words of Bama's fight song, you know it says "send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave." Further evidence of the once rivalry.

On a side note floridajacket, I noticed your avatar on edsbs today. Not at all related to the thread, but I had never seen that pic anywhere except for in your avatar.

EDSBS used it in an earlier post about WVU and I blatantly ripped it off of them. I've always found the incineration of furniture amusing. From what I hear, a bonfire was started at Techwood/Bobby Dodd after the 1990 UVA win. A bunch of techniques and freshmen dorm furniture apparently combined to melt the traffic lights.

On another note, I liked the "not gay!" post about UVA's fight song. Never thought of "White and Gold" as inciting "mass interstate murder," although I'm sure ArchiTech has.

ah yes.......

No I was referring to the number of Tech people who still support Gailey.

....the "Chan supporters are settling for mediocrity!!" cry, and the image that comes to mind.....LOL!!

That would be 'Bama, NYD 1926. We were the second, NYD 1929.
