in the know.
If already discussed, please ignore:

Definitely not wanting to be a wet rag, but what if any are the major challenges to getting this bumper crop of juniors signed academically?
Would it only be SAT/ACT scores in some cases? (I know they have to graduate)

Could you elaborate? The major challenges? As long as they still want to sign in February, that is the earliest they can actually sign a letter of intent. Not sure if that answered your question though.

It does appear we are being slightly more aggressive on the academic side...a little more risk. However, the character/discipline/family backing of the kid is being allowed to factor in heavily...which is something CG wanted.
We have passed on some kids this year, such as John Knox...or else we very well could have landed both he and Justin Houston.
As far as any of our current commits needing more work to be done, the only I am aware of is Jacoby Monroe who takes his test Sept. 11 and carries a 2.7 GPA...but rising heavily since a rough 9th grade year.
Other players considering us that have work to do are Tony Tucker (we lead), DeAngelo McRay (no test yet), and Sacoby Carter (we would have commitment by now).
All of the other commits are solid barring some failure their senior year...plus they have to complete a 4th year of math.
Commitments:
Threet- 4.0 GPA; 27 ACT; enrolling January
Melton- >1100 SAT; Mech. Eng.; enrolling January
Butler- 2.8 GPA; MGT (enrolling Jan.)
R. Jones- 3.2 GPA; 1290 SAT; MGT
Jefferson- Ind. Eng.; A/B student
Gilbert- 3.7 GPA; 1690 SAT(new score); Biology
Donley- Comp. Science
Jackson- 3.4 GPA; 22 ACT; Biomed. Eng.
Walls- 3.8 GPA
White- 860 SAT as a young jr.; will retake; B student
Tarrant- 3.2 GPA; 19 ACT; Architecture
Monroe- 2.7 GPA (rising heavily since tough 9th grade year); ACT Sept. 11

What's the story with guys like Sidney Haynes...

Recruits who have us high on their list and have received an offer from us. Are they out of luck because the position have been filled?

Between Gilbert, Threet, Melton, Jones, and Jackson - those are some pretty impressive academic numbers.

Walls 3.8 GPA is none too shabby.
I believe that Brad Jefferson has high numbers, no one has asked him the queston yet. He had offers from people like Duke as well and wants to major in Industrial Engineering. This kid is forgotten about because of the early commitment...but he was at the top of our board for LB.

I think that we would have taken Haynes if he in fact had followed through on his commitment early, but since we are filling up with 'high A list' players, it looks like he will have to wait.

3.8 GPA is nice but I would want to see the other numbers as well. There's a reason why colleges want to see more than GPA before accepting a student.

Are any of our other recruits looking to enroll early?

I meant to put down Butler wants to try to enroll early. I just completed an edit. Thanks.

Thanks. I thought I had heard someone else was planning to enroll early, but I couldn't remember who.

2008 may be the year that early enrollees could help out a lot. We'll be able to have 85 on scholarship again, so we may have to sign more than 25 to get back up to that number. If so, we can use early enrollees to do it since they count against the previous year's class.

The class we sign in Feb. 2007 had to be a home run...and our staff looks to be heading towards a grand slam!

Question HiveredTech...

If Melton and Threet enroll early... wouldn't they count against last year's total scholly's prior to the restrictions? In which case, we could sign two more this year or next? Or is this already being factored in our 17 currently?

I think you can go against either class. However, the number that will hold us back is the 79 total.

I am assuming that they don't switch hats in their high school cafetorium in early Feb.
The basis of the Q is that during the last 5 years we didn't even invite kids if they did not already qualify.
There is more to the question but I thought/think that it doesn't need to be laid out there.

On a seperate issue - How is Tarrant or anyone going to be able to play Division 1 FB with all of its time requirements all year long and take Architecture as a major? It may have changed but Architorture majors seemed to live in the building = especially around project times. It was by far the most time consuming major I saw at Tech.

I don't recall any other architecture majors but I could just not know about them.

What typically happens is an athlete says they want Architecture...but ends up changing to Building Construction. Brian Oliver was often touted as being Architecture, but was BC. BC is a tough major that requires a lot of time as well. It is taught within the College of Architecture.
