Does the ncaa try to horn in at all regarding HOPE scholarship recipients that walk on at Tech? I would imagine that every in state Tech freshman qualifies for the HOPE.
I would think that we are the only school in the university system that can say this.

It does not cover room & board, only class tuition. Also, they have to meet the same requirements as any other HOPE scholarship student in the state of Georgia.

GT fooball requires tougher academics for preferred walk-ons than they do the full scholarship kids. I was told they have to get a 1100 on the SAT and I believe they said 3.5 on the GPA.

My guess is it just makes it easier for Tech and ugag to ask in state kids to walk on and makes it cheaper for all in state scholarship players. It's one reason the baseball team is so successful. There's only 11.7 scholarships iirc for baseball so they can split it up and still cover most of the cost for in state kids.

Hivered and NC, I was aware of most of what you wrote, but not all.
I think you guys would have made mention of this, but I was really wondering if the ncaa tries to attach a partial scholarship against our allowed total number for those that walk on with a HOPE scholarship.

I know this may sound crazy, but you never know.

no

You cannot give 1/2 scholarships in football or basketball as you can in baseball, tennis, volleyball, etc.

What is funny is that the 1/2 scholarship was designed to help schools fill rosters in the non-revenue generating sports. What Hope has allowed us to do is put together a full scholarship for in-state baseball players from what I understand about it. Not the original intent, but for now you have to love it if this is the case.

In football, either you are full ride or you are not. If you are given academic scholarships you have to meet the same standard as others that receive that same scholarship...such as Hope.

Thank you.

The HOPE really has been an awesome tool for baseball. I know this is being a generalist, but I believe it's a fact that baseball players as a whole have pretty good grades.

Of course, uga and other state schools have the same advantage. I think this is great too! I am behind anything to support the game of baseball, especially at Tech.

I avoided baseball players like the plague. Nothing like being told by a lab partner that he can't help with the lab because he'll be in Chapel Hill playing all weekend.

That is true JJ, but don't forget that while thousands of "eager beavers" congregated in Fla. during spring break, baseball players stayed in Atlanta to play games in the cold rain against the likes of Evansville Univ., and Farleigh- Dickinson.
That was the old days of course.

Do the walkons get in with the training table, i.e. food, nutrition and weight training? Do they have to pay some amount for the food?

Don't know how new, but you can only give scholarships to 85 players. You can't split it and have 90 on partials.

I just gave myself the willies! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eekhair.gif

Today's auc went into just this subject. 100% of Tech's incoming in-state baseball players qualify for the Hope.
uga claims 95%.

High school prospects living in states around the southeast that don't have lottery based scholarships like Ga. and Fla. are at a big disadvantage.

I would think it's pretty common to hear the words..."Daddy just got a transfer. Wer'e moving to Fl./Ga.!"... spoken in homes of high school prospects of all "minor" sports.

Was today a rainout?
