Well....... that actually makes me feel better. (Although the B back argument is a stretch)

The only reason we beat VT last year is because we had a Deandre Smelter on the team.
This year was our worst crop of wide receivers I've seen at Tech in 19 years (coincidentally the last time we failed to make a bowl game).
Wide receivers who are big time playmakers are an absolute MUST if this offense is going to be Top Ten like it was last year. Have to keep recruiting the 6-3 to 6-5 receivers and pray to God they pan out as well as Smelter or Waller or Hill or BayBay.
We had ZERO jump ball guys or someone like Smelter or BayBay to run the "come back" routes to convert 3rd & 15's.
Go back and read stuff from the spring. The talk was that Leggett almost earned PT as a true freshman, and Weimerskirch was going to be the change of pace since he had been here since spring to get some experience.
Believe it or not, in a year or two I think our skill position talent well be the best its been since PJ arrived. We will have tons of depth and lots of speed at A and B back and our freshman WR crop should be very good. Our mistake was missing on those positions and having to recruit so many this year.
I still cant figure out what went wrong with our offense this year. I thought this offense was all about the QB running it and everything else was plug and play. How wrong I was! JT looked awful by the end of the year. His passing in 2014 was a pleasant surprise. His passing in 2015 was worse than Reggie Ball's worst day.
Its easy to criticize the offensive design after this year but there's no denying it was unstoppable last year. CPJ didnt forget how to coach in a year. So why did we suck so badly this year?
Defensive coaches have learned how to defend against the TO and were effective in getting their players to do what they needed to do. The deep middle linebacker generally stopped our option in its tracks. They keyed simply on the direction the QB was going and sprinted to the outside to take the option back. We made almost all of those guys look like All Americans.
On obvious running plays, the defense put nine guys in the box.
We will continue to see the defense used by Iowa, ND, and most of the rest of the ACC because it works.

expect insults and name-calling for making these accurate observations but you are correct, sir.
Those insults would be spot on as well.
We saw the same scheme last year, and years before, and had success against it a large portion of the time.
I don't expect most fans to understand the nuances of our offense, but you would hope the average fan would understand the basic principles of American football.

This is not new. Teams have always done this, and we have absolutely made them pay for overcommitting. This year our OL wasn't able to get to the 2nd level and repeatedly missed blocks on the MLB and we weren't enough of a passing threat to concern anyone.
I agree that we will continue to see it until we have an OL that can pass block, WRs that can separate, and a QB that can hit them (which I think we have).
Disagree that it was the second level blocks that killed us. We were doing a horrible job on the first level blocks. It was by and large the non-optioned DLmen that were making the tackles on our bbacks. That allowed the LB to attack the playside with abandon.
We adjusted by running a lot more counters. But the freshmen OTs were not up to the job of holding their blocks once the backside DL knew to shed because the play was coming back their way.
The O was a bunch of guys with weaknesses. Sometimes, you can cover for that. This year we could get enough guys good enough at the same time to do jack.
No, I agree that we were bad on the 1st level as well, I was just directly addressing the comment about the MLB killing us this year. We've executed those plays in the past, we just couldn't block them properly this year on multiple levels.
