How come Navy has a better offense than us?

I know they don't play the same level of competition as Tech (DUH!) - but they rolled up over 300 yards rushing vs. Notre Dame last year / Navy had 417 yards rushing vs. Pitt last year / 374 yards rushing vs. (then #13) Memphis.

Everyone has figured out how to stop us - stack the box / blitz the gaps.

Meanwhile Navy just keeps rolling along / all systems go!

SHEESH! (Translation: F*ck me!)

A couple reasons:
They're a lot more uniform than we are. All the kids at the service academies have to fit within certain height/weight criteria. They're also all pretty much valedictorians etc of their classes, so they pick stuff up quicker. Where we run 85 Schollys deep, they can dress 100+ guys. Heck, they pulled a guy out of the stands from the brigade YESTERDAY and he led a clock killing 90 yard drive at the end of the game. We're a lot less uniform, a lot less deep, and we typically play stiffer competition.

That said, they're teaching and recruiting well for what they are and at the end of last year were a better team than we were. We'll see about this year.

I'm sorry. This is some apologist bullshit right here.

You're legitimately arguing that Navy has it easier than we do.

They run their offense quicker and with greater precision. And, that irritates me. I don't know if we try to do too much or what it is. But, the Navy offense simply is run quicker.

Because they are smarter and can recognize different defensive fronts.

But, Tech had the #1 offense in all of college football in 2014. What happened???

This is like a great mystery novel or something!

Not necessarily easier on the whole, they just know their limitations and benefits and build their system accordingly. For one year it worked out better for them. We got crushed by injuries, lost a bunch of talent. They didn't. They were better last year.

From a recruiting standpoint, they're decisions are easy. They can't take 300+ lb linemen, but they also have an entire school of smart athletic guys that have to participate in some sort of athletic team. The sword cuts both ways. They'll be outmatched weight wise, but can also be incredibly deep for what they do have.

Simplified, smaller play book. Their offense isn't as complex and diverse as ours. They run the pure triple option a lot more than we do.

OK, so let us stipulate: For one year they were better. So were probably 60+ teams last year.

Also, I've known a bunch of squids in my life so far and believe me, the guys that get into the academy are not all valedictorians or really even highly intelligent.

Easy: Navy played both Notre Dame and Pitt after we played them.

Navy watched our tape to see how the defenses played and gameplanned accordingly.

Pretty much. I'd disagree that a significant chunk of the academy guys aren't highly intelligent, but that may be more my view of the situation. I grew up around quite a few and while they may not have been GT type engineers, most were exceptional at something. typically system management type smarts. Granted, my opinion may be skewed. My dad taught statics in Annapolis from 79-82 and my step dad was a 2 star admiral. We were typically around top performers whatever duty stations they were assigned to. That said, you are right. There were quite a few teams better than we were last year. Focusing on the one that runs the same system as us is an exercise in futility and frustration.

It is almost like things like graduation and injuries have an effect on how the team plays from one season to the next. Mysterious indeed.

They have no roster limit and effectively no limit on the number of hours they can practice.

those laser bass boats are really good, we just cant afford those
