I'm not saying they are or aren't Chanesque, necessarily, and I know all the yadda yadda about Navy's talent vs their opponents, but other than that, do these losses look Chanesque to you guys?

beej67,
still stuck on the "Chan got fired for being Chanesque" thing..

It's tough to tell without actually seeing the games. The links provide a scoring summary but not what plays led up to the scores.

I watched this game, as I do for just about every Thursday game and I can tell you the middies had a ton of injuries (3 def starters out for the game the first half) and Kaipo-Noa Kehaku-Enhada (had to cut and paste his name) threw at least 2 picks in the red zone to give the game away. You could see the talent discrepancy inscrease as the game went on. This game was lost beacuse of 3 reasons:

1) Injuries on D
2) Horrible red Zone decision making by Kaipo
3) Talent difference

Don't know about the rest.

How many Johnsonesque wins did Gailey have in 6 years? None

Syracuse at the Champs Sports Bowl.

beej67,
acknowledging there weren't many .. :)

I don't think I know what a Chanesque loss is, unless it's either blowing it at the end or giving up and getting blown out. I don't know if PJ's team had any late losses due to poor play on their end versus good plays by the opposition, but I'd be willing to bet they never gave up in a game.

Delaware is in the 1AA championship game. The other team in that game beat Michigan, so it isn't outrageous.

Essentially, it's losing a game you're supposed to win.

Actually, this is the best series of "Chanesque" definitions I've seen so far:

losing a game you're supposed to win
laying an egg in a "statement" game
losing due to lack of preparation
flat out quitting and getting blown out

Based on those criteria, I'm guessing the nailbiter losses to Ball State and Delaware may have qualified as "losing a game you're supposed to win." Ball state went 5-2 in the MAC, 7-5 overall, CNNSI power ranking down in the 70s. Delaware was awfully good last year, though. Maybe give each of those two losses a "half a Chan point," putting Navy at ChanFactor 1 last year.

By comparison, let's look at Tech's losses. According to the above criteria...

BC loss: not Chanesque
Virginia loss: seemed Chanesque at the time, on Criteria 1, but it turns out UVA was good this year, maybe give it half a point.
Maryland loss: Chanesque
VT loss: definitely Chanesque
UGA loss: not Chanesque, unless we add "astounding unlucky" as one of the criteria, which I wouldn't oppose honestly.

So Tech was at ChanFactor 2.5 this year.

A ChanFactor of 1 instead of 2.5 would have put us at either 8 or 9 wins.

In Chan's defense, he had few Chanesque losses the past few years. My definition of a Chanesque loss would be:

Losing a game due to lack of motivation, without ever really competing. Or in Chan's words, the players let the system make the plays, instead of making the plays themselves.

This year, only the VT game was truly Chanesque. We had one good drive in that game.

The Maryland and UVA games could have been Chanesque, but the team played with some intensity the second half, making those games at best .5 Chanesque.
