How Stupid Was That Call?

1st and Goal at the 6 and Reggie passes (and gets intercepted) - How much worse can this one get?

At least it was aimed at CJ. Still stupid call when we have two GOOD running backs.

Was the call stupid all the times it worked the past three seasons?

I swear it works like clockwork. If we rush it, and it doesn't work, we're too conservative. If we pass it, and it doesn't work, it's a stupid play call.

exactly. just like Quinn on the QB draw with 19 seconds and no TO's left...and down 10-0...all from the 6 yd line. If he does not make it they look like idiots as they go in down 10-0.

We had 500 yds. of offense...320 on the ground and 180 through the air. If not for the hold, we would have had another TD and 30 yds. passing.

I think it's an automatic call when CJ is on the wide-side of the field in single coverage no matter the down. And, if you see the replay, it's obvious CJ was interfeered with. The CB is all over CJ, not even looking back. Another DB comes over and makes the INT.

No-one questioned the call when we did it against ND or Samford and it worked like clock-work.

The pass was underthrown, but it was such a terrible Pass. Interference no-call. Those refs should be fired (add in the personal foul on MJ).

I just assumed it was a quick slant since it was thrown short (listened on the radio of course). If it was a fade to CJ, then it wasn't too bad of a call. I still hate to see us not running on first and goal from the 6.

And why the heck would you throw it short to CJ?! Throw it straight up if you have to. He's too frickin tall to not catch it.

It was not a smart call. We were just saying in the stands that we hoped he didn't throw the "jump ball to Calvin" after getting a first down on the 6. Calvin was interfered with as the corner never even turned to look for the ball but the underthrow is what made it an interception.

Then the refs gave them a touchback when it appeared on the bigscreen replay that the interceptor went down on the 1.

To me, the fade is not a good call unless you are a little further out, say the 10-20. And it is always a pass with a higher probability of interception since its just a lob. If the receiver doesn't time his jump just right then the defender has about a good chance to come down with the ball if he is looking for it. Now add the fact that you are throwing the jump ball into double coverage and defense is expecting you to throw it...

Yes. You're absolutely right. Throwing the fade to Calvin Johnson in single coverage on the goal line vs a 5-9 cornerback is a dumb call. I don't know why we would ever do it.

/scarcasm

This is the dumbest thread ever.

Gee beej if it was single coverage, how did the second player make the pick?

IIRC, it was a safety that came over just in time to grab the ball an inch off the ground. It wasn't like Calvin was right in the middle of two defenders.

First, Calvin went for the corner to make a play like in floridajacket's avatar. Second, Reggie underthrew the ball badly, and Calvin had to try and grab the ball from around the defender. Third, the defender tackled Calvin to the ground, in what should have been called obvious pass interference. Fourth, the ball bounced off of both of them while they were on the ground. Fifth, the safety came over from run support and dove and caught the ball (just barely) before it hit the ground.

Just so you know what actually happened...

Well if Reggie didn't loft it up enough and the safety was in run support and he somehow was able to make it to the flag for a pick then thats pretty amazing. I didn't know The Flash played college football.

How about a video clip to prove CJ was single covered?

I love it!

If it worked it was a good call. If it didn't it was a bad call. Period.

We complain about calls that have the defense completely fooled now? The play call has nothing to do with execution. If Reggie had thrown a perfect pass it wouldn't have changed the call. A great call is one that the defense isn't expecting.

ramblinwise, you are being a bit pugnacious. If you didn't see the play, then take the word of those of us who did.

Pass was underthrown, Calvin should file charges against the defender, ball hit off both players and the safety slid in to grab it an inch from the ground.....period. That's how it happened. Believe it or not.

As to the wisdom of the play.....It works almost every time against single coverage WHEN RUN WELL! It was NOT run well, hence the interception.

I love how the people who are most critical of our play during the game are people who didn't actually watch.
