...both the SEC and Pac 10 would have been able to fill up their respective bowl slots? The Music City bowl must be the SEC's 6th/7th slotted bowl. The Emerald bowl is the Pac 10's 6th slotted bowl.

The possibility of a deal or two with other unfilled bowls nonwithstanding, looks like Virginia and GT would have been left out in the cold. I'm not certain if Meineke or Champs is considered the ACC's 4th slot, but does Meineke still take a 6-5 NC State over a 7-4 GT if GT has nowhere else to be placed?

ACC - SEC Bowl Tie-ins

ACC: 1)Orange(BCS), 2)Gator, 3)Peach, 4?)Champs, 5?)Meineke, 6)MPC Computers

SEC: 1)Sugar(BCS), 2)Capital One, 3)Outback, 4)Peach, 5)Cotton, 6?)Independence, 7?)Music City 8)Houston

Wouldn't be a bad idea for the ACC to attempt a tie-in with Music City to face another SEC opponent, as with the Peach.

With a 12-team conference, the ACC needs to expand it's tie-ins (well, as long as practically every 6-5 team goes to a bowl) to 8 bowls as the SEC has done.

We already have - the Music City and Emerald Bowls will be part of the pecking order starting next year. Since the SEC and PAC-10 couldn't fill their slots, we were able to start the affilliation a year early.

The Music City will be against the SEC and the Champs Sports is switching to the Big Ten, so we will have some opportunities for better bowl opponents as well.

mm42: Thanks for that bit of information, I now remember reading about the new ACC bowl tie-ins for 2006, but I did not realize it involved the two bowls the ACC is filling this year.

The real question is whether the league will put any kind of process in place for bowls to pick teams. If you're 6-5 with a losing conference records, Boise or San Fran is fine.

Swofford claims that there will be:

"It's not necessarily the same order, and it's not necessarily the same contractual agreements," Swofford said, adding the new contracts will swing the balance more in favor of teams with better records than teams with larger fan bases.
