what has happened to Garner. It seems as if he has been buried at the bottom of our depth chart and I was wondering if anyone has any new information.

I saw this kid play in the semi finals a couple of years ago here in Florida. He played for Daytona Beach Mainland and was an absolute stud. By the way he was playing against the Lakeland Dreadnaughts who were last years mythical national champions for High School football.

I had the opportunity to stand on the sidelines, being a former coach at Lakeland and saw JG up close and personal. His first 2 drives he put his team in the endzone ansd was up 14-0 before Lakeland could get things turned around and eventually win.

I have heard the notion about the supposed weak arm and that is a bunch of BS. This kid has a slingshot.

I remember beiong very excited when he decided to come to The Flats and now he is relegated to scout team and 4th string. I do not get it.

Someone pass along some info if you have oit please.

He'll get his shot along with everyone else next year.

Recruiting stars are never an exact science. Brandon Sumner was a 4*, along with Latrez Harrison... Jimmy Dixon and Hobie Holliday were 5*, etc.

I'd been wondering if you would ever bring Garner up! Lord knows I have been doing a solo act on this subject long enough.

I have tried but have never been able to get a straight answer......What is Garner not doing that is expected of him? He has more talent than all the rest so what is he not doing that is expected of him?

For better or worse too many people here would rather protect Gailey and Nix's credibility before they would admit that these same coaches are inflexible as far as the offense and the quarterbacks are concerned.

In the best interest of the team Jonathan Garner has deserved a shot at real playing time ever since his redshirt status became history.

I have no clue, but those who do go to practice have said he just hasn't performed. Maybe they can fill you in?

Bennett has outplayed Garner in practice. It seems to me that Bennett is a notch better at just about everything. I am surprised that Manley played before Garner. Last year Garner did not impress me much. I thought the walk-on (Donaldson?) looked almost as good as him, but it seemed like he improved this year. I figured he was the 3rd string QB for sure.

Unless Garner improves a lot between now and next year, I don't see him starting.

The way things went down Sat. TB and Manley were both much more poised than Garner in very simular cirstances the way I saw it. But I like you expected much out of him.

From what I have heard from those in practice, the concern is the same one Spurrier and Meyer had....his arm strength and somewhat slow delivery. heck...he is only a freshman though.

Manley looked good to me. Garner looks kinda gangly and awkward. He needs to hit the weights and add some hard bulk. If he did he would look better. For some reason he missed a handoff and had to shag it himself for -1.

I thought Garner looked a little confused, out there. Much less sure of himself than Bennett or Manley.

beej67,
a little wary of transfers after Suggs

Kyle Wright was the second rated high school QB in the nation and Drew Weatherford was the ninth rated high school QB in the nation. Both were thrown into the fire as redshirt freshmen and both had a lot of trouble, as the Miami-FSU game last year showed.

Currently, Garner is also a redshirt freshmen who didn't have the high school accolades of either Wright or Weatherford. With his extra year of experience, Bennett right now shows more poise as you would expect of someone who's actually played a full game.

And btw, the QB situation has not been a closed book in the past four years. Chan very nearly burned Bennett's red shirt against NC State in 2004, after Reggie had arguably the worst half of his career. He actually had to be convinced by his assistents to not put Taylor in the game.

Very overrated QB prospects IMO. Weatherford is shaky, and Wright just downright sucks(watch this year's and last year's F$U/scUM game for proof).

florida: It has been a closed book. Putting Bennett in there? Burn his redshirt? Puhleeze! Bilbo was the best quarterback on the roster and he was shut out of the position in favor of Reggie. That Bennett was annointed the backup that year though he didn't have a clue was ridiculous.

State, he might have been the best QB but he couldn't figure out the offense. No knock on Bilbo because I hope he makes it in the NFL but CCG saw that he couldn't make quick decisions. I know that for a fact.

Well, either it happened or Chan was lying after the game. I strongly, strongly remember this taking place. And I would hope Chan did consider it, as Reggie had what has to be the worst statline of his career in the first half: 5-18, 1 TD, 3 INT.

Oh well, I don't want to get into the tired old arguments. At least in my opinion though, I still don't think we had a real second option at QB until 2005, and the UConn game that year showed Reggie was still a better option than Bennett.

I would speculate that RB is still #1, but Bennett is a lot closer now. On the sidelines Bennett is a physical speciman...last year he looked like a skinny 17 year old, now he's matured and put on weight - he is much bigger than either Manley or Garner.

In the game he was very poised, calmly checking through his receiver options. He needs game experience, but if he has to fill in for RB this year, he will do well.

'Mover: I don't like getting into the same old arguments. But statements such as Reggie has been the best and only option at quarterback 4 years running are untrue. Plus decision making doesn't seem to be a prerequesite qualification to run the Gailey-Nix offense. How much more simple could it be?

I understand what you are saying and I am only answering your question about Bilbo, that's all. Facts about him I do know as too bennett and garner I can't answer.

floridajacket....you are 100% correct on that one. Bennett was coming in and Nix talked him out of it. CG was furious.

How many practices do you go to? Obviously not too many if you're still holding on to this:

Puhleeze! Bilbo was the best quarterback on the roster and he was shut out of the position in favor of Reggie.

At the few practices I went to, in the Suggs era, Bilbo unconsciously transposed the numbers in the playcalls. That's not exactly what you want in a quarterback.

I would speculate that RB is still #1, but Bennett is a lot closer now.

I would agree with that assessment, based on what I've seen, which admittedly isn't a whole lot. I'd like to see Bennett get a series or two in all our games, especially if Reggie starts to get unsettled.
