Dust good point about Ross's first year. You are right he did know how to coach. He also hired good responsible assistants.

What about O'Leary's first two seasons? 6-5 and 5-6. Yea I know that those years were not with his recruits, but these were not Gailey's either.

Yes, but we did great the next four years when we had a new offensive coordinator. Maybe the same will happen again.

any of our fb coaches has ever had. Robert Lee's first I am not sure about. Carson & Curry had to deal with more and worse injuries than we did this year and the talent was not as good PLUS they both played a decent schedule, something we should do again. We actually improved in Pepper's first season. Fulcher so/so. Lewis may have been this bad.
I am not trying to attack any individual but it seems to me that we only played 2, maybe 3, good teams. In the areas where coaching can make an immediate impact (turnovers & penalties) regardless of talent we never improved all season. I do not understand what this staff is doing sometimes (perhaps not that I should)). but it seems like players would just disappear. What happen to Dixon? Did the fullback ever get a carry or throw this year? What about the tight ends? They seem not to have been part of the game plan ever. I hope the DB coach is a great recruiter because I think we where lacking in that area with 3 pretty good SR's. Also did anyone notice that John Cooper said Bilbo had they "Best arm I have seen all year?" DB, BO'B, CG all have to look at that statement. I am sorry for rambling on but these thoughts have kept me up most of the night. I pray for all our coaches, players and administrators. I WANT them to succeed, but I want GT to succeed more. I just am getting the feeling that the only voice I have is my wallet.
That being said we have the BEST PLAY BY PLAY MAN IN ALL COLLEGE SPORTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An addendum if you will, our strength coach has got to be replaced now. It was evident after last year.

That is true but thought it was an interesting appraisal of his potential. I am not an AJ basher and would never boo him. I want both kids to do well.

Yeah, but it helps.

Ross's first two were pretty stinkeroo. This wasn't the worst I've seen but it does look familiar.

I think the discipline/training issue is a real problem. Not trying to be an "old fogey" but these young guys need more discipline and leadership. Why? Because they will get beat by the ones that have it. This is a very competitive activity and the finest honed programs will surface as the winners. This years case in point, Wake Forest.

Discipline and leadership are key but they mean different things to different people and can be done in many ways. For every Bear Bryant there is a Bobby Dodd. Both can work with the right leadership. I don't think the staff this year did a good job of supplying leadership, and I'm not just talking about Chan. This has to come form everyone on the staff. I also think that you have to look to the players to provide leadership, especially the seniors. In fact this if often more important than anything the coaches do. What worries me is that this was missing last year as well. I'm not sure what the answer is because it's never a simple thing, but we have to get that fire back.

BTW based on what many posters say we should have fired Ross after his first year. If you want to see a meltdown go back and take a look at that. Curry had gone something like 7-4, 9-2, 5-5-1 in his last 3 years. Ross was winning in the 4th quarter in his second game (won against Furman or somebody in the opener), lost on a big comeback by UNC and tanked from there to a 2-9 mark IIRC.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Why do you guys keep bringing up Ross's first year? Are your memories that short? Ross took over a program that was ALREADY in the crapper. Remember Curry snuck out of town after a stellar 5-5-1 season that included a tie to Furman. Facing a difficult schedule, Ross's team always appeared prepared and focused. And the ONLY game that first year that got out of hand, was the loss to Steve Spurrier coached Duke. Make all the Duke jokes you want, but Spurrier proved its ALL in the coaching. Something we are learning first hand this year. One more advantage we had with Ross in his first year, we KNEW he was a winner. The jury is FAR from being in on CG.

Ross outcoached Gailey by so far in a first year comparison that it's laughable. Any comparison of Gailey to Ross is disgusting.
