Did anyone other than me notice the physical difference between their SA's and ours? Has anyone looked at the record of our program, and our success against UGA, since the integration of minority athletes into college football? If you want to consistently run with the big boys you have to give a little to get a lot.

Fisher?

Fisher DeBerry; is that you?

Fisher is from Georgia as am I.

Perhaps we both are willing to admit that which most already know (kinda sounds like Dave Braine). We can not recruit the number of athletes to compete consistently with the top teams. It breaks my heart since there would be nothing wrong with a Sports Management Major. We have no chance on a long term basis to compete with the Miami, VT, FSU and UGA. We may win 1 out of every 4 but the magical season we all hope for will never ever happen again.

The players did their best last night and I am proud of their effort. In the real world effort without results brings change. Brothers and Sisters, that is something that dear old Tech is unwilling to do.

I understand the sentiments ...a move such as this would help level the playing field for GT. The academic requirements certainly put GT at a disadvantage. But, it is academics that sets GT apart from so many other schools, particularly here in the south.

I am not an alum of GT (but a graduate of UGA no less). Having a passion for GT was instilled in me at an early age, so strong in fact that four years in Athens did nothing but strenghten my passion for GT (try living amongst Dawg nation for four years as an openly passionate Tech fan).

I personally would not want to see GT do anything that would even remotely diminish what sets them apart from most other institutes of higher learning. Sure, the road is tougher, from a recruiting standpoint and in assuring that GT SA's stay on top of their academics and course loads.

But, look at this season, despite the tough academics and smaller recruiting pool that GT has to select from to begin with, if not for a misshap at home in October against N.C. State and a couple of poor punt coverages and mental mistakes last night, your looking at a nine-win season.

For me anyway, I have always liked the fact that GT is different from most of the pack ...it makes those special seasons all the more special. Last night hurt ...and it still hurts this morning, but I'd still rather be a Jacket fan (tough academics and all) than a Dawg (from a fan perspective anyway, my diploma here in my office will always have that seal of the arch on it) anyday. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif

You're addressing the wrong problem. It's our recruiting(not the curriculum) that's preventing us from competing with the best. Granted, the curriculum is an obstacle but it can be overcome with the right coaching staff in place. Again, I'll take an average of 3 star athletes over 4/5 stars as long as they have integrity, class and the capability to better themselves on and off the field. It's the coaching staff's responsibility to help them and I think our staff is deficient in (2) areas:

1) Getting the athlete on campus
2) Developing the athlete

Now see, THIS is what I don\'t get.

I have always believed that being a Tech fan is about appreciating our accomplishments in the face of our obvious differences from the football factories, NOT about wishing we could accomplish at that level by becoming one of them. I recognize that we have a lot of fans who were around when the differences were less pronounced, BUT I also recognize that the vast majority of our fans are smart enough to realize that times have changed. So when I read a post like this, I wonder why someone like you, who wants what you want, is a fan of Georgia Tech?

I don't mean that in a "go root for someone else" way. It's just that I love Tech BECAUSE we achieve in both arenas. I love Tech for its uniqueness. It makes beating Miami in the Orange Bowl--and even playing the Dawgs so evenly--that much sweeter for me.

UGA was much taller...but that is the only difference I saw. It boils down to COACHING, COACHING, COACHING!

VIVE LE DIFFERENCE, MY FRIENDS.

Re: Now see, THIS is what I don\'t get.

Well, what's equally frustrating is how so many fail to recognize there is a huge "middle ground" position to be had here. Everyone falls for the extremes...our current method vs football factory. C'mon, there may be way too many Popes on ugag's roster, but they also have the T.Battles and Davids of the world too.

Well, I think GT stands on the middle ground.

In terms of Division I, BCS-conference football, the "factories" are at one end of the spectrum, and Duke and Vandy are at the other end. It's really rather amazing (to me) that GT has chosen to continue to compete at the highest level while maintaing academic requirements (entrance and curriculum) equalled only by Army and Navy.

Re: Well, I think GT stands on the middle ground.

well said, Stick man.

With the exception of punt coverage and QB, we had plenty of talent to beat uga last night.

The silver lining to last night is exactly that. Ga. Tech has and can continue to recruit suitable talent to compete and beat nearly anyone without having to enroll and hide illiterates.
I am convinced that with a few changes, we have the coaching to expect 8-9 win teams. (Sorry Mr. Braine)

The only thing that does not make sense to me is that we have not been able to recruit a 4-5 star quarterback (I don't remember how hard JoeHam was recruited). To me, Ga. Tech should be able to recruit with anyone in the country at the qb position.

Particularly when you can present #21 as being on the other end of a potential QB recruits passes. I'd want to throw to him.

A Lot of that has to do with Reggie. No One wants to go to a school where they don't think they will play. I expect a good QB in next year's class because we wont be returning a starter.

Funny thing about JoeHam. He was player of the year in South Carolina but because of his height only Nebraska and Tech recruited him to be a quarterback. Little did some schools know that the most important measurement for a quarterback is the size of the heart and the ability to make good decisions under duress. Things "Little Joe" excelled at.

Albany,
you are so right. When I wrote 4-5 star quarterback, I was uneasy about that. I am a huge skeptic of the "Rival" type star system.
With no offense to Goose, I believe we need heady qbs over star studded quarterbacks. We absolutely need the proper coaching/mentoring to take advantage of this type of athlete.

pocketwatch...

I agree about the heady QB comment. One who is smart and poised is much more important. There are a good number of them out there that have it upstairs but don't have the big arm or the quick release. There are also a good number who have the physical skills but not the head for the position.

But when you find one that has both, you already have a step up on your competition. Those guys are rare.

It looked like to me we were pretty damn competitive with the "big boys". Ask Auburn, Miami and UGa about that.

And before you throw up the VT or UVa games or another loss, ask UGa about competing with Florida and LSU, Miami and FSU about competing with NCState, VT about competing with Miami, or UVa about competing with VT.

Quite frankly, we are as competitive as any program out there right now, possibly excepting USC and Texas. And moreso than some other "big boys" such as Tennessee and Nebraska.

Yeah, we got some nagging problems that kept us from the championship game and winning 10+ games this year, but by and large we are extremely competitive.

General Rule Of Thumb...

Rule of thumb. Whenever you think to yourself, "I hate to go there", just don't. There's no upside.

Are you saying we played too many white players or that black players don't want to come to Tech or is there something I'm missing? I can't make much sense out of what you're hinting at here.
