I heard a Vick trade rumor this morning...

...went something like this:

Oakland trades Randy Moss, the #1 overall pick, and another receiver to Atlanta. Atlanta trades a first round pick and Vick to Oakland. Supposedly it's something Oakland might consider doing, and with Vick's timely bottle incedent and a coaching change in the works (who favors the style of QB that Shaub is) it's concievable.

With that trade, the Falcons could ditch Vick, promote Shaub, draft Calvin, unload a couple other receivers for OL or defensive moves, and keep the running game intact with Shaub throwing to Moss and Calvin.

I've been under the impression that Atlanta would be in cap hell if they traded Vick due to his signing bonus. Maybe there's some stipulation out there that other people aren't aware of?

I heard last night on 680 that if they traded Vick, they'd be stuck with ~$16.5M in dead money against the cap next year...

It might be worth it....

Having Johnson and Moss should make any QB look good.

That's what I was thinking. Sign Shaub for cheap, on a long term deal, and get great production out of him because of the WR corps. Eat the cap hit on the trade for one year, cut existing WRs as necessary, and throw money at defense the following year.

I agree with you GTLee. The Falcons will never win a championship with Vick at the helm.

I like the possibility, too, but even if this trade does take place, are we sure the Falcons would draft Calvin? They just might decide they have other needs that outweight the need for another W/R, even if he is the best in the country.

If the trade goes through as I heard it (e.g. Randy Moss and Jerry Porter) they probably wouldn't take a wide receiver. If I were the Falcons, I'd tell Oakland to keep Randy Moss and rape them for everything else I could .. additional draft picks / etc. Something like this:

Oakland gives Atlanta:
Jerry Porter
#1 overall pick, 2007 (calvin johnson)
Fabian Washington (or maybe Warren Sapp, or perhaps a 1st round pick in 08)

Atlanta gives Oakland
Mike Vick
2007 #10 overall pick
Roddy White

We get the WRs we want, plus defensive depth that we don't have, they get the QB they want, and keep Moss on the same team.

I've been listening to sports talk radio for the majority of the day, and here's the only thing I really keep hearing...

"You can't trade Michael Vick because he sells tickets." I grant you that, he does put butts in the seats. However, that is typically followed with, "Give him an O-Line, some receivers, and a defense, and then judge him." Well, we're really not ever going to get all of that at once with the amount of money sunk into Vick (IMO). If you look at the possibility of a trade like this (from a GM's perspective) doesn't it have the real ability to make your team better? You have the ability to acquire a wider body of talent to come up with a more capable team. Would a team that consistently goes to the playoffs not sell tickets too?

Just my $.02, but, I really don't care either way what happens as I'm not a Falcons fan. :o

Well, with all the first round picks the Falcons have wasted over their history on WRs who didn't pan out, it would be just like them to pass on CJ if they had a shot.

I think the Vick trade is a great idea personally. Moss to come in and CJ to have some pressure taken off of him. To have the opportunity to grab CJ and dump Vick IMO is too good to be true.

I would like to see Vick give it a go somewhere else. I think Schaub is the better pro QB. Vick would be a good slash but he's too expensive under current contract for that role.

Gnats...IF CJ is involved than it DEFINITELY belongs in GT FOOTBALL. Don't you think? I mean really, we are not talking specifically about Vick more so the the first pick.

I stuck it here thinking the convo would gravitate towards CJ, but won't be heartbroken if it gets moved.

I really don't the occasional non-GT related thread on the Football forum. I'm sure we're all hardcore college football fans and at least casual fans of pro football. This isn't like the Hive, which has enough clutter even without the non-GT posts.

If this thread does get moved though, I would completely understand.

Schaubb isn't really even a pro QB yet. Sure, he came in for a couple games and did well, but in those situations teams could not game plan for him and they had no film on him(look what happened to Romo after a couple games). Not to say that he won't be good, but I don't think you get rid of a player of Vick's stature for an unproven prospect, especially when you are bringing in a new coach.

It's not like we have a Reggie Ball situation here, Vick is not single handedly losing games for us. Last season was a combination of us being much more banged up(especially on defense) than people realized, and receivers dropping balls left and right(Finneran, our most sure-handed receiver, being out the whole season did nothing to alleviate the problem). No, Vick's not the most accurate passer in the world, but the receivers certainly didn't step up and help out.

Also, I'm not too sure the west coast offense was the best fit for Vick...I'm pretty excited to see what Petrino can do with him, as a college coach with fresh ideas. Let's not give up on Vick quite yet...it was not too long ago that we were calling him the savior of the franchise, and it's not too late for him to be that. As much as I'd love to see CJ stay in Atlanta, I'm not ready to give up on Vick just yet, personally.
