But first of all, thank goodness for this board...
I really like RR (unlike some good folks here), but why is it that the Hive has to have the usual "hall monitors" that criticize how people post, when they post, the content etc....And now today, is the perfunctory comments on fans behavior.....Whatever..

as far as the game

1. Folks, at the QB position, we may just be having a couple of bad games, but geezzzz, QB ain't cutting it right now..Maybe its coaching, schemes, personnel, or a combination. If not for Hollings running, we'd have clearly lost that game.....and now we have lost that (sorry, his injury IMO is 99.9% chance of ACL)

2. Given #1 above, we HAVE to at least put Bilbo in SOME....If not MORE THAN SOME.....I keep hearing the various arguments (doesn't know the offense, makes mistakes, whatever),but I'd be happy to see him in there, even with a scaled down version of the offense...I can recall the growing pains with both S Jones, and J Hamilton, but the upside was SO GREAT -> PLUS, their big plays overshadowed the mistakes....Right now, we have mistakes by Suggs, with a smaller upside....Would Bilbo have made 3 INTs ?

3. Our D stepped up BIGTIME...Its the first time in years I felt the D had the game in control (how long has THAT been ?).

4. I believe part of the reason for Hollings injury was exhaustion.....ACE showed he was more than capable - why couldn't he have releived Hollings at least a LITTLE ? Maybe it would have made a differnece (in the injury) maybe not...

5. Are we snakebit or what ? I think of the game as a loss somehow...

6. whats the deal with Ford and Hatch ?
If they could both come back nearly 100% we may be ok

7. The option looked GREAT and we got 8-10 every time we ran it...Sure could have used it last week

8. It seems to me that the OL looks better, FAR better with run blocking, and in turn, blocking on play action passing...Suggs looked better too, with play action passing (usually less options for receivers too, interestingly).....I think the OL is FAR better when we primarily run, then set up the pass - play action passes......This looks like a run-blocking OL to me.......

9. The blitze package was awesome - could have used it last week too.....I like the direction of the defense -- we're going to need it

10. How long has it been since we've seen an average offense at Tech ? (excepting Hollings individual ability)- man we have been spoiled !

I think the key to the rest of the season is at QB. I don't know if Suggs is the guy. (hey, there's a reason why he stopped playing at Tenn!) I mean, this is the 4th game and he looked worse yesterday than last week. Maybe Bilbo needs to start getting a whole lot more touches this week at practice?!

1) Suggs is clearly struggling. He is pressing to hard. I think we should play Bilbo but it has to be with a limited set of plays. He has a lot of work to do to learn how to read defenses. He looks for the primary receiver and if not open runs. Not a knock on him but just speaks to his in experience. That said I think there are ways to use him without "throwing him to the wolves"..see Penn States's use of R-Fr Michael Robinson

2) Ace did get nine carries. I think Hollings was in the game at the end because we were tring to get a first down and kill the clock. Nine points is not insurmountable against a team like BYU. The injury (if it is an ACL) was probably not due to being tired. When an ACl goes it can go at anytime. Think back to Jerry Mays (running a sweep in shorts in practice planted his foot and tore his ligaments) or Harie Robinson (Wr from Athens in the mid 90's tore his ACL on the first day of freshman practice running the agility drills, or Jamal Anderson of the Falcons. Lets hope he has a good recovery.

3) On Defense, I think the biggest improvement is the play of the defensive backs. Cudo's to the new DC in improving a notorious weak spot on the defense

4)I would not be surprised if Sidney Ford does not play this year given his problems with consussions. Hatch seems like he has not regained the speed and quickness he had before the injury. He can't hit the corner like he could. If he was ready he would be playing

5)People can post whatever they like. In doing so they must be prepared to be challenged by other people who don't share their opinion. SOme who post on this board want the freedom to post controversial opinions but don't want to take the heat when others disagree with them

83Jacket, you are right on.

No question Suggs is struggling, but does anyone who states "I would just be happy to see Bilbo on the field" ever think that maybe maybe the best guy we have at the position is Suggs?

If you ask current players, they will tell you that it is no contest, Suggs is clearly ahead of Bilbo. Not to slam the players, but they will iterate stories of D'bo running the wrong way on called option plays, etc.

I think the person who talked about keeping Suggs in the 3-5 step with a back is correct - we need to find out what he does best, and utilize it (we should know after 4 games).

BIG games from 2 R-Fr, Henderson and R. Houston. I think we will be very happy with Hendu over the next 3 1/2 years - he seems like a mini-Gathers. I was really impressed with Houston today at nickle. He looks so much more comfortable and agressive than he does at corner - this may be a great way to get him adjusted to the game and comfortable out on the field. He looked good in blitz packages as well.

Our line did look a lot better run blocking than pass blocking.

I think S. Ford is done - you either recover from a head knock in 2-3 days, or you are done. If he's still having problems, he's done. It's a shame, he always seems to be hurt - great kid, tho.

Man, what has happened to J. Smith??? He has looked awful the last 2 games. We have got to figure out a way to get our receivers in a groove.

Well, I have seen enough to say that AJ is AJ. Its not that he is not trying. He has a strong arm and can play QB. He does not see the coverages well, he focuses on the primary receiver and throws without regard to the position of the defense. This almost lost the game yesterday. This is something AJ can improve on with good coaching IF he can see the field. But some guys never learn how to "see the whole field", it is a gift and you may have it or not.

In the meantime, BOB needs to design plays with simple reads that AJ can execute. 1 primary receiver and if he is covered, throw the ball over his head out of bounds OR have a designated safety valve every play to go to. Don't expect AJ to be able to find 3-4 wide outs running around in the middle of 5 defenders and find the open one and throw to him before he gets pressure. He's just not that kind of QB at this point. And he's not a scrambler. A roll out would help him focus on a primary receiver, cuts the field in half, and gets him away from half the rush.

I hope to God that Chan is not so hardheaded that he won't at least try Bilbo when AJ is struggling. He said that he would use a 2 QB system, but now seems hell bent on staying with Suggs no matter what, even more so due to chants of "Bilbo" from the stands.

I think BOB's 1 back offense is an abomination to God and man. Why do you ever use it in short yardage? But we use it all the time. I know the theory is to pull one of the Dbacks out on a wideout away from the play but we know where the damn play is going and they don't. The extra back leading into the hole would help our short yardage situation.

On pass plays, an extra back to block the blitzer/breakaway rusher would be a good thing for us and the other back could be AJ's badly needed safety valve in the flats...

If we don't have a quick hitter over the middle, the opposing linebackers are going to cheat up on us forever. The seam in the zone between close up linebackers and safeties is large and you have to do it to get them out of the box. If none of our TE's can catch a jump ball over the middle, how about lining up Bridges at TE or close SE some and run the slant with him. This will open up the O more than anything especially with Tony gone...

Hollings you are the man, get well soon, whether that's a month or a year, we love ya.

Now to the Defense, that was a great job yesterday. Turnovers put us in a very bad situation yesterday and we still held a high powered offense to 19 points. I thought we should have played tighter on the corners to take away the little outroute they ran over and over. Houston is doing a great job in the nickel package, and yes he is a natural safety.

They started picking up the blitzing safety with a back in the 4Q, we need to bring the backside backer when they do that to keep them honest. Parker is doing a great job in the middle. Finally this year our D lineman are getting their hands up!!! Smith and Wimbush look great. WE WILL RIDE THE DEFENSE'S BACKS THIS YEAR FOLKS SO GET USED TO IT.

The WACky officials were horrible. I wish that Will Glover had knocked the white hat into the lower East instead of cutting back on that reverse. How did they miss that facemask on Hollings? And they screwed us on the spot every chance they had.

To the players, there is nothing ahead but air and opportunity. When a leader goes down, new leaders must emerge... Who will step up now for Tony...

To the fans, as much as you want something to happen, be careful what you cheer. I think its OK to chant "BILBO" or "GO" on 4th down. But you should have seen the looks on the players faces (I sit right behind the bench) when the boos reigned down yesterday. That can do NOTHING but hurt our program. I hope to God there weren't many recruits there yesterday to hear that...

Two comments, one on each post, both in agreement with the posters views of these points.

Which is worse, having a quarterback that tends to run to quickly, or one that looks the pass play to the receiver. Suggs never looked of the primary receiver and was intercepted three times. Each time the TV analysts showed the replays and verified Suggs never took his eyes off the primary receiver. The defensvie backs also knew this.

I agree on the one-back set being an abomination to football. Same song, but I want even attempt to sing the fourth verse. It should be evident by now.
