PJ were true (That he would not be able to or should I say be committed to recruiting good defensive players in here, that offense would be his biggest priorty)

WELL, I'm more than impressed with T.J. Barnes, wow, this could be the start of something good..:fingersx:

A HUGE DT....BIG pickup for P.J.
I LOVE IT !!!

I believe the entire defensive staff will be in Brandon Thompson's home tonight? :fingersx:

that is illogical. PJ is obviously committed to winning and that means a solid D.

Spurrier is only example I can think of a successful coach ignoring D, however when he had his best years he had super solid Def Cord.

I'm very familiar with Spurrier and his illustrious career. He won @ UF for several year's with very good offenses and avg defenses. It wasn't UNTIL he made the all out committment to defense in hiring Bob Stoops as defensive coordinator, that he shored up the defense and won his 1st National Championship.

Bobby Bowden is a great example also, when he 1st came to Fsu he won on avg. 9 to 10 wins a year and was known across the country for having a great high powered offense and one of the very best offensive minds in the game back early on at Fsu, He had the best offense at that time in the country but had poor to average defenses. BUT, when he finally made that same kind of committment to defense and hired Mickey Andrews away from Clemson as DC, THEN he began to win BIG an finally competed for national championships.

My concern was, when we hired P.J.that we all knew he had one of the best offensive minds in college football, BUT, his defenses had been lousy. So, that will be the big question mark his 1st few years here, will he be committed to defense? and that means recruiting great players on defense and hiring the very best defensive coaches. I will have to admit on that front I'm watching Wommack very closely, was he the best P.J. could have hired? That I.M.H.O. will determine if we win BIG under P.J.

Im hoping P.J. is that fiery competitor and does commit himself to having a very good defense here at GT and doing what it takes to achieve that. He can get great defensive recruits here at GT (Barnes is a great start)

Remember Oleary put all the best athletes over on the offensive side of the ball. He also had that ego that prevented him from bringing in a REAL D.C. and giving him total control (Like Chan did with Tenuta)

We also have to get great players on defense and not just on offense. And not recruit all the best players for just one side of the ball like Oleary did.

There are so many great offensive minded head coaches out there that have lousy defenses and year in and out and never come close to winning championships. Spurrier hired that kick arse DC in Van Gorder and I predict he will win an sec title very soon. The jury is still out on Wommack. I just hope P.J. knows something we don't in hiring Wommack. I like what I see in landing Barnes, this is a great get with P.J.'s 2nd commit.

Wommack's record as a DC is very good. He's also a good recruiter -- he got GT in on JT Floyd in no time. He was the best candidate for the job among the three DC's we interviewed. Much better than Ellis Johnson. Can't figure out why folks like EJ so much, his on-field results have been so-so.

And I truly hope you are right.

I.M.H.O. This hire by P.J. may very well determine how good we will be under P.J.

We will be good on offense under P.J. that is a given. But, to be great and compete for championships, we will have to have a solid defense under P.J.

No offense 1gtfan, but that post makes no sense at all. Suffice it to say that PJ isnt an idiot and knows you need defense to win. The fact that Navy can't field a top defense is meaningless. You can scheme an offense around talent shortcomings, but you can't do it on defense. Plus the fact that you don't know anything about Wommack means absolutely nothing. Sou Miss had very good defenses when he was there the first time, ARk had good defenses until the team fell apart and Nutt sacrificed him to save his own butt and we will have a respectable defense with him at the helm. It's pretty condescending of you to lecture our head coach on the need for a good defense don't you think?

1st off, no one is lecturing P.J. here only stating an opinion on an internet board, With your logic we should just shut down GT internet boards with no opinions or concerns stated.

All I'm saying is that P.J. will ultimatley be judged by wins and if he is able to carry us to that so called promise land that Gailey wasn't able to get us to. And in fact I.M.H.O. for him to get us to that promise land we have to be good on Defense and not just good on offense like we were under Oleary. Who knows if Wommack will be good, neither you nor I know for a fact he will be successful here.

Just stating concerns here that is all. Hey, I'm pulling for P.J. so don't tell me im lecturing P.J.
Just concerned that his defenses were lousy at Navy and we didnt hire a very well known DC. not saying Wommack will not be great here either, just stating a concern and will be watching it closely like many others.

PJ made a smart move when hiring the staff. He understood GT had a good defense for the most part the past 6 years and retained the nucleus of the defensive staff under Chan. He probably was even open to keeping Tenuta, but its better he left. He inserts a DC like Wommack who can work with Giff and JM. I see no reason why the defense can't be on par or better than the past few years.

Navy's defense last year was lousy due to them basically returning only about 2 starters and then suffering injuries. His defenses prior to that were pretty decent given the size, athletic issues that Navy faces against most opponents. My concern is that you would make a statement like that without doing much if any research. The facts don't support your conclusions.

Plus, do you really think a coach who's been around as long as PJ doesn't know how important defense is to winning a championship? Seriously, your post makes it sound like he's some rube who just started doing this instead of someone who's actually won championships before.
