I would demote Collins to DC (to avoid the buyout), dismiss Thacker and promote either Long or Weinke to HC with a deferred compensation contract.

Collins is incompetent and we cannot allow him to hold our program hostage over a buyout we cannot afford.

Probably can't be done that way, but it sure seems like a good solution to me.

... I would've fired Collins roughly halfway thru last season and never would've signed him to this contract in the first place.

I doubt you can demote someone without paying the buyout. Otherwise, you would probably see teams do it all the time. There is probably contractual language preventing that.

I think the AD is going first, anyway

omg - why do we give these sweetheart contracts to unproven coaches? Coaches can bail for a better offer with no penalty but programs have to sell their soul to part ways with a coach who sucks?

This is like the movie hangover.

Coaches usually have significant financial penalties for bailing to other programs. Although often the new school will pay them for the coach, but there's not much you can do about that.

I don’t recall a situation where a HC took a demotion. Not in P5 at least.

Bill Lewis was “reassigned“ to another position in the AA office, but he left anyway. I remember watching the announcement live by Homer Rice live with Bill looking on like he was on death row.

The media excoriated GT for the unheard of and “classless” firing of a head coach during the season.

Is this a common theme for athletic directors also?

The problem is that the AD's are in cohoots with the coaches in this mischief. No accountability contracts that last forever with big payouts. Most ADs are just former coaches trying to look out for their buds.

Yeah, otherwise you could tell the head coach that they're now an analyst, or that they're most needed at the concession stands. You're either paying them to be the head coach or you're paying the buyout for them not to be the head coach.
