I\'m new to StinGTalk... question...

Hello StinGTalkers!

I have read the Sting off and on (mostly when the Hive is down) and an not used to the format of the board. Is there a good way to get down to new messages when you go back into a thread that you previously read?

Far as I know , PJ, you just have to scroll.
There is an explanation of the icons out next to the list topics. They're supposed to tell you if anything has been added since your last visit, but I'm kinda dumb about how they work.

I read the definitions for the icons, but I'm not sure they are updating for me. Oh well, not a real big deal... just something to get used to.

Patent, if you click on my profile above and then click on Update New Post Indicators it should cause all of the light bulbs to "turn off". Then the next time there is a new post in a topic the light bulb will turn back on.

Not sure if I understand your question, but on the Forum Summary page (Football, Basketball, Other Sports, Computers & Tech, and Off-Topic), look at the top right and you will see "Todays Active Topics". Clicking on that will isolate topics with todays activity. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Basically, my question concerned trying to quickly identify new messages. I generally check from work randomly throughout the day and would like a quick way to see new messages posted since I last looked. Currently, it looks like you either have to update new post indicators after everytime you check messages (kind of a hassle), or remember how many posts were in a topic.

While I kind of like seeing the whole thread without waiting for each message to load like you do on the Hive, I like the ease of scanning down the main Hive board to see which messages I have or haven't clicked on. Right now I'm still adjusting to the Sting interface and looking for more efficient ways to stay up on new messages.

thanks,

Make sure your cookies are enabled. The folders to the left of each topic will glow yellow if there is a new reply to the post. If you check the topics at home and the goto work, your work computer will not be updated because the updated post cookie was written to your home computer. There is no way around this.

Re: I\'m new to StinGTalk... question...

I'm a member of another UBB board(non-Tech) and on that one a neat feature exists.

On the topics page, under the "Last Post" column, it will tell you when the last post was made, and by whom. If you click on the user's name, it will take you to that last post. Very convenient.

This is with an older version of UBB, 5.45c. Don't know if it's possible with this version, but it is a very nice feature I've wished was here many times.

Post a link and show me what you are talking about. Let me see what it looks like. That may be something that was removed from later versions as I don't see a config option for this now.

I sent you an e-mail

Re: I\'m new to StinGTalk... question...

the best way to get a "quick look" is to look at the "todays active topics" which is in the right middle above the # of registered members on the forum listing page.

The latest posts are always at the bottom and if they relate to a previous post then they will have used the quotes option.

You will find there are positives and negatives to this type of format. The negative, like you stated, is it takes a few seconds to get around. The positive is that it is more difficult for people to get spamming posts going. Members posts are confined to the topic and it is more difficult to get them to bleed over.

This format is more for the discussion type of post. The other format is more for the "headline" type of post. IMO

We run the latest UBB board and we are always looking at the enhancements of the newer versions. In fact, there are a few enhancements, such as avatars, that we did not have when we first started the board.

We are always looking for ways to improve it.

thanks for your input.
