The table below is for all the JT fans. It is quite interesting to analyze his defensive coaching. It is very apparent he does well against the rush. Part of this comes from the fact that he blitzes on every play which is very effective against the rush.

The pass defense is a different story. We are way to low in these areas. I attribute this to the constant blitzes. The one stat that the NCAA does not keep is the number of passes completed at a given yardage. Teams have discovered they can complete 5 to 7 yard passes at will. See the BC and VT tapes or any other worthy opponent for that matter. We rank 116 out of 119 in interceptions. Not good for a DC who is supposed to be the best.

We do well on 3rd downs but rank 118 on 4th downs. Again we get burned on the blitz.

Fox Sports has rank all 119 D1 teams http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/7492594?MSNHPHCP&GT1=10637
We are ranked 38. Think about how you feel about being ranked at this spot. If you like it fine. If not look at our average ranking on defense. It is only one better.

I like the blitz but not on every play. We are a one dimensional defense that any decent OC can beat. Couple that with a personality that is not open to the fans and media and we are not looking at a viable candidate.

I'll take the #12 total defense any year.

Our corners sucked until we put #1 back there.

He produced with subpar recruiting as far back as 4 years ago.

Muschamp can't say that.

These are two strong statements -

#1 - our defense has put us in a position to win. Get an offense and we would have been damn impressive.

#2 - we need strong corners and safeties for his defense to really work - we are recruiting better now, so the people are in the pipelines. I expect the passing numbers to improve.

How does #12 rushing, #33 passing, #12 total = #37 average?

tenuta does a fine job. there may be some disparities between the secondary and the d-line & linebackers, but that is only because of the bad recruiting in that department as we recruit more interior guys than coverage guys. Morgan Burnett will become a great player in the future for us and as he has shown this season he can help the secondary in a lot of ways by playing either safety or corner. the point I'm trying to get at is that the secondary will straighten itself out next season after our players have all the experience they have gained this year.

OfficallyBuzz, you really owe it to yourself to see how our defense compared to other defenses in the ACC. When you look at our defense against defenses in the same conference, that play against basically the same/similar set of offenses, how do we fair?

The most telling thing about our pass defense this year has been the complete lack of interceptions. Our secondary, and in particular our corners, are doing well just to tackle their man, much less cover him. As a result, they give them 5-10 yard situations, which makes quick outs easy as pie.

This has always been the case in Tenuta's defense, but I think the reason why it's so notable this year is just that until Burnett moved to corner our best two secondary players were probably the safeties.

ivey, did you flunk out of the pound? Do you not know how to average numbers? 12+33+116+49+12+17+10+118+2+1=370 divided by 10 = 37

Kenny Scott was a shut-down corner for us for FOUR years.

We need another one badly if we plan on holding the Georgie Boys to one score ala LAST YEAR where we STILL LOST!!!!!

DAMNIT!!!!!!

In conference, Tech is 3rd in total and rush defense, 7th in pass defense, and 4th in scoring defense.

aeromech not a bad suggestion. I will try to make the same comparison with the ACC. However this will not give a totally clear picture since we play non conference games.

FTR....

"This season will get out of control. This season will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it."

My favorite sig of all-time.

EXACTLY how I felt going into this year.

I guess I was saying that I don't think averaging them all is the way to go. Toss a few other stats in there and you can skew the "average" any way you like.

The meaningful numbers are #12 (rushing), #33 (passing) and #12 (total).

EDIT: and calling someone a Georgie dropout is a damned low blow, my friend.

Add to those stats that our crappy offense likes to keep our defense out there by being crappy!

He's counting INTs at 116th and 4th Down Conversion at 118th with equal weight as Scoring Defense, 3rd Down Conversion, or Total Defense. That is just a retarded way of looking at things.

The problem I have is that if his defense needs strong corners and safeties to work, why doesn't he adjust when we don't? I like JT and his attitude towards defense, but sometimes you have to change things based on your personnel.

For sure, we have been hurt the last few years at DB...I hope if he stays we get 3 more Morgan Burnett's back there...

So we rank in the top 4 of the ACC in every category that matters except for passing where we're 5th? 4th down efficiency depends on about 10 plays this year and it doesn't account for the yardage of the those downs. More interceptions would be nice, but it again goes back to our DB recruiting. There's a reason MB leads the team in this category.

I just don't see how Tenuta is harmed by these statistics.

I should have called it retarded, would have made my point better.
